Cologne is easy alone because its best-known ritual is built for one person at a time: a small glass of Kölsch, brought to your table until you put a beer coaster on top. The Rhine bank has a free sculpture park, and November is busy, with the Christmas markets starting on 16 November. The cathedral, long free to walk into, now needs a ticket.

Drink Kölsch the Cologne way
According to the tourism board, Kölsch is served by a waiter called the Köbes in a cylindrical glass that holds 0.2 l, carried on a round tray and set down at your table. The beer is drawn from a 10 l barrel. The Köbes' gruff manner is part of the local culture, and the way to say you have had enough is to lay the beer coaster on top of your glass (Cologne Tourism, breweries).
For a person on their own this is a gift: you never have to decide when to order again, and you control the end of the evening with one gesture. The same page names traditional dishes: "Himmel un Äd" (Heaven and Earth), pork knuckle and bratwurst. In the Brauerei zur Malzmühle, which it calls Cologne's second-oldest brewery restaurant, Rhineland Sauerbraten is still the front-runner. Brewery restaurants cluster between the Cathedral, the Rathaus and the Rhine Promenade, so you can pick one on your way. If eating alone is still new, read how to eat alone in public first.
The Cathedral now has a ticket
Since 1 July 2026, tourist visits to the interior of the Kölner Dom need a ticket: EUR 12 regular, EUR 6 reduced. Worship services stay free, and outside service times the north transept (the side towards the main station) is open for prayer or lighting a candle. The Cathedral is open usually daily from 6:00 to 20:00. Visits are usually daily from 10:00 to 17:45 (last entry 17:30), and on Sundays and church holidays usually 13:30 to 16:30 (Kölner Dom, new visiting fee, opening hours).
The tower climb is EUR 8 (reduced EUR 4), or EUR 12 (reduced EUR 6) combined with the treasury (tower page). A tower is a good solo outing: nobody is waiting for you at the top.
Art and late Thursdays
- Museum Ludwig. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 18, closed Monday. Regular EUR 15.40, reduced EUR 10.40. On the first Thursday of the month it opens 10 to 22, and from 17:00 entry is EUR 7 for everyone (free for Cologne residents). The first Thursdays after 22 November are 3 December 2026 and 7 January 2027 (Museum Ludwig).
- Kolumba, Kolumbastraße 4, a six-minute walk from the main station according to the tourism board. The art museum of the Archdiocese combines a ruined church with modern architecture. It is open daily 12 to 17 and closed on Tuesdays (Kolumba, Cologne Tourism). The small opening window suits a short, slow visit.
- Schokoladenmuseum, Am Schokoladenmuseum 1a. Open daily 10 to 18, closed 24 and 25 December. Adults EUR 17.50 Monday to Friday and EUR 19 on weekends (Schokoladenmuseum).

The Rhine bank: free art and a six-minute crossing
The Skulpturenpark Köln is free. From October to March it is open Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 17 (April to September 11 to 19). Its main entrance is on Riehler Straße and a side entrance on Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer; the house rules ask visitors to avoid noise (Skulpturenpark Köln).
The Kölner Seilbahn crosses the Rhine from the Zoo side to Deutz, 930 m in about six minutes. It runs daily 10 to 18 until 8 November 2026 (last boarding 17:45), then pauses for winter. It runs again on the four Advent weekends, Saturdays and Sundays 10 to 18, from 28 and 29 November (Kölner Seilbahn).
Aimless afternoons: the Belgian Quarter and a film
The tourism board describes the Belgian Quarter as one of the most popular districts for restaurants, shopping and going out, with cafés and restaurants especially along Aachener Straße and Venloer Straße and small independent shops: boutiques, galleries, bookstores and record dealers. The Stadtgarten there combines a restaurant, beer garden and concerts, and hosts a Christmas market in winter (Belgian Quarter, Stadtgarten).
For a seat in the dark, Filmhaus Köln at Maybachstraße 111 (S+U Hansaring) runs a daily cinema programme and accepts the Cineville subscription (Filmhaus Köln, Cineville). See cinema alone.
Christmas markets from 16 November
The market at the Cathedral, called the "Markt der Herzen", is on Roncalliplatz from 16 November to 23 December 2026. It is closed on Sunday 22 November. Hours are Sunday to Wednesday 11 to 21, Thursday and Friday 11 to 22, Saturday 10 to 22, with over 120 stalls (Kölner Weihnachtsmarkt). The tourism board says the other Christmas markets in the city open around the same time, and names the Market of Angels and Heinzel's Winter Fairytale (Cologne Tourism, Christmas). A market stall is easy alone: you stand, you eat, you leave.
Getting around
KVB offers eezy.nrw, a digital ticket: you check in and check out by swiping in the VRS eezy.nrw app or the KVB app, and the price is calculated from the straight-line distance. KVB says it never costs more than the single ticket on one trip (KVB, eezy.nrw). The cable car is served by lines 18 and 140 on the left bank and 150, 250 and 260 on the right (Kölner Seilbahn).
First solo outings
- Easy: one Kölsch. Sit in a brewery restaurant, take a glass when it arrives, and put the coaster on top when you are done.
- Medium: the sculpture park and the cable car. Walk the free Skulpturenpark, then ride the cable car over the Rhine and back. The cable car runs until 8 November, then on Advent weekends.
- Bolder: the Cathedral tower. Buy the tower ticket (EUR 8), climb, and come down when you like; nobody is waiting for you at the top.
