Dresden is easy to do alone because the day has a clear shape. The old town on the Altstadt side is for museums and churches, the Neustadt across the Elbe is for courtyards and small cinemas, and in the evening a few places stay open late. This page follows that rhythm and puts the cheap and free options first. The Striezelmarkt opens on 25 November.

Free first: a church and a palace
Start where it costs nothing.
- Frauenkirche, at the Neumarkt. Entry is free during the open-church hours: Monday to Friday 10 to 11:30 and 13 to 17:30, with changes possible, and varying times on Saturday and Sunday. The church's calendar lists "Wort & Orgelklang" (a short service with organ music) at 12:00 and 18:00 on many days. Seats are plentiful and silence is the norm (Frauenkirche, visitor information and home page).
- Dome climb. If you want height, the dome is open Monday to Saturday 10 to 16 and Sunday and holidays 13 to 16, with last entry at 16:00 and weather-related changes possible. It costs EUR 12 for adults and EUR 7 reduced (dome climb).
- Japanisches Palais, Palaisplatz 11, on the Neustadt side of the river. The Dresden State Art Collections list free admission, Wednesday to Sunday 10 to 17 (SKD, visit).
For tips on pacing a visit, see going to a museum alone.
Thursday and Friday are the late days
Two bigger museums bend their hours toward people who work.
- Albertinum, Tzschirnerplatz 2. Regular hours are Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 17. For the special exhibition "The Great Drama: Auguste Rodin and the Debate over Modernism" there is a long opening on Thursdays from 5 November 2026 to 22 August 2027, 11 to 20. The evening ticket for 17:00 to 20:00 costs EUR 8, against EUR 14 for the full ticket (SKD, visit). Three hours before closing is a calm time for a single visitor.
- Deutsches Hygiene-Museum. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 17, closed Monday. Adults pay EUR 12, and from 15:00 on Fridays admission is 50 percent off (hours and prices). The museum also has a cafe and a garden, which makes it a good place for a long, unhurried afternoon.
If you prefer old paintings, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister at the Zwinger is open Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 17. A combined Zwinger ticket is EUR 18 and covers the Old Masters and the Sculpture Collection up to 1800 plus the instrument salon and the porcelain collection (SKD, visit). Check the SKD page for which rooms are open on the day.
A smaller choice is the Puppentheatersammlung in Kraftwerk Mitte, Theatergasse 12: Thursday and Friday 14 to 18, Saturday and Sunday 10 to 18, EUR 7 (SKD, visit).
A milk hall with standing tables
The Pfunds Molkerei, Bautzner Strasse 79 in the Neustadt, is a milk shop covered in around 248 square metres of hand-painted tiles, which the shop says were recognised by the Guinness book of records. Its Milchtrinkhalle has mostly standing tables, takes no reservations, and offers fresh milk, buttermilk, wine and changing cheese specialities. It says plainly that it is neither a cafe nor a restaurant. Entry is free, you may visit without buying, and cards work from a EUR 5 purchase. It is open Monday to Saturday 10 to 18, closed on Sundays except the Advent Sundays 10 to 15 (Pfunds, home and tastings on site).
Standing at a table with a glass of buttermilk is about the lowest-pressure meal in the city. Read how to eat alone in public if a seated meal still feels like a leap.
Across the river: courtyards and cinemas
The Neustadt is where Dresden slows down.
- Kunsthofpassage. A chain of themed courtyards: the Hof der Elemente with its musical rainwater construction, the Hof des Lichts, the Hof der Fabelwesen and more. Inside are a courtyard cafe, the bookshop Meraki and the record shop Grooveamt-Records (Kunsthof Dresden and shops). A record shop is a good place to flick through a shelf with no one expecting a conversation.
- Programmkino Ost. Its programme includes a "Neues Italienisches Kino" series from 2 to 27 November 2026 and the Czech-German culture days (Programmkino Ost). On Saturday 28 November from 10 to 12 it also lists an Advent wreath-binding session; registration is on the cinema's site.
- Schauburg, Königsbrücker Strasse 55. It lists films in the original version with subtitles (Schauburg). More ideas: cinema alone.
The Großer Garten in November
The Großer Garten is the large park east of the old town, with a baroque garden around the palace and an English-style landscape park with winding paths. Its park railway has its winter break from 2 November, so treat it as a walk (Großer Garten). It is the natural way to get to the Hygiene-Museum on foot.
Christmas markets: dates for 2026
The Dresdner Striezelmarkt is the 592nd and runs from 25 November to 24 December 2026 on the Altmarkt. The opening day is 25 November from 16 to 21, then 26 November to 23 December daily 10 to 21, and 24 December 10 to 14. The city lists more than 200 traders and, among the highlights, the Stollenfest on 5 December, the Pfefferkuchenfest on 6 December and the Pyramidenfest on 12 December (Striezelmarkt).
The city's page on other markets lists the Mittelalterweihnacht im Stallhof at the Residenzschloss from 25 November to 23 December 2026, and the Augustusmarkt on the Hauptstrasse in the Neustadt from 25 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closed on 24 to 26 December and 1 January (Dresden, other Christmas markets). A weekday afternoon is the calm option; see Christmas market alone.
Getting around
The Dresden transport company DVB says a day ticket is worth buying if you plan more than two trips in one tariff zone in a day. It is valid from validation until 4:00 the next morning; the Dresden-zone single ticket is EUR 3.60 for up to one hour, and the Dresden-zone day ticket is EUR 9.50 (DVB, tickets).
First solo outings
- Easy: a Frauenkirche midday. Free entry, a seat, and a "Wort & Orgelklang" service with organ music at midday on many days.
- Medium: a Thursday evening at the Albertinum. The EUR 8 evening ticket from 5 November, then walk back across the river.
- Bold: buttermilk and a Neustadt afternoon. Stand at the Pfunds hall, wander the courtyards, then book a film.
