Things to Do Alone in Freiburg

Freiburg is easy to do alone because the week has a rhythm you can borrow: a market in the morning, a different city museum open until 19:00 on each weekday from Tuesday to Friday, and an arthouse screening at night. The hills are close, but in November one of the two lifts shuts for maintenance, so plan around that date.

Stand at the Münstermarkt

Traders set up around the cathedral six days a week. The official tourism portal describes a farmers' market on the north side, a craft market on the south side and flowers by the portal, with around 130 stalls in all (visit.freiburg.de, old town, Lange Rote). Saturdays are the busiest. The portal's market calendar shows the cathedral market starting at 07:30 on weekdays (weekly markets).

The local order is the Lange Rote: a 35-centimetre grilled sausage in a roll, traditionally with fried onions. The baker who created it sold it at this market as a boiled sausage in December 1949 and put it on the grill two years later. Vegetarians get a tofu version, the "Lange Grüne", and the portal also points to Stefan's cheesecake from a stand on the square. A stall is a good first solo meal because nobody expects you to sit and make conversation. See how to eat alone in public for the general method.

Neighbourhood markets are quieter. The same calendar lists Herdern on Tuesday at 15:00 and Vauban (Alfred-Döblin-Platz) on Wednesday at 14:30.

The late-museum rota

Freiburg's municipal museums are open Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 17, with one house staying open until 19:00 on each of four weekdays (Museen Freiburg, visit). The museum homepage lists the addresses (Museen Freiburg).

WednesdayArchäologisches Museum ColombischlössleRotteckring 5
ThursdayMuseum für Neue KunstMarienstraße 10a

The museums' own page says the extended hours do not apply on public holidays, when all houses close at 17:00.

Of these, the Augustinermuseum is the one to pick if you only choose one. The tourism portal says its new rooms opened at the end of February 2026 and that the café in the Zinnengarten has reopened. From the gallery of the former monastery church you can see the original sculptures from the cathedral up close, including gargoyles (visit.freiburg.de, Augustinermuseum, museums overview). The Museum für Neue Kunst shows contemporary art in a former girls' school in the old town. A museum with a café is a gentle place to practise, and if you want a general guide, read how to visit a museum alone.

The cathedral and its tower

The Freiburger Münster has a 116-metre west tower, which the tourism portal calls a lacework of stone (visit.freiburg.de, Münster). The cathedral's own site lists the tower climb as Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday 11 to 16, closed Wednesday, Sunday and holidays 13 to 17, with an adult ticket at EUR 5. It adds that the top gallery stays closed in the winter months, and that the climb is at your own risk (Freiburger Münster, tower, German). The page for visitors is in English as well (information for tourists).

An evening at the cinema

Freiburg has an unusually strong film scene by the portal's account. Three independent cinemas, the Friedrichsbau, the Harmonie and the Kandelhof, are dedicated to arthouse film, and the portal mentions foreign-language evenings among their formats (visit.freiburg.de, cinemas).

The Kommunales Kino in the old Wiehre railway station, Urachstraße 40, has shown films outside the mainstream since 1981 and has a café, Barbette, in the same building (visit.freiburg.de, Kommunales Kino). Its own site lists Cine Brasil from 27 to 29 November 2026 (Kommunales Kino, German). A festival programme gives a solo viewer plenty of company without any pressure. For the general idea, see going to the cinema alone.

Up the hill: two lifts, one closing date

The Schlossbergbahn funicular runs from the Stadtgarten to the Schlossberg in about three minutes. It runs on demand and passengers can request it themselves. The portal lists Monday and Tuesday 10 to 18 and Wednesday to Sunday 9 to 22, with a one-way adult ticket at EUR 3.50 and up and down at EUR 6 (Schlossbergbahn). The Schlossberg itself has free access at any time and a 360-degree view at sunset, with the Kanonenplatz as the classic lookout (Schlossberg).

The Schauinslandbahn climbs 746 metres in 20 minutes from the valley station behind Günterstal and the portal says it can be reached by bus and tram (Schauinsland excursion). The operator runs daily 9 to 17, but its autumn maintenance break runs from 16 November to 4 December 2026 (subject to change), and the mountain-station café is closed then too. An adult return ticket is EUR 15 and a single EUR 12 (operating hours, fares). The operator lists the break as subject to change; outside it, the cable car runs daily.

Cafés beside the water

The tourism portal singles out several cafés. Café August has a window onto the stream, Au Contraire serves coffee and cake by day and becomes a bar in the evening, and Kolben Kaffee by the Martinstor has its own patisserie. In Herdern, Café Liebes Bisschen bakes at home (small cafés). Café Extrablatt is on the Dreisam.

The Dreisam is also a walk: the portal describes a 4.6-kilometre stroll from the Schwabentor with benches and lawns (exploring Freiburg on foot). The old-town stream channels, called the Bächle, date from the town's founding in 1120. Urban legend says that anyone who steps into one by accident will marry a Freiburger (old town).

Warm water on a cold day

The Keidel Mineral-Thermalbad sits in the Mooswald forest at An den Heilquellen 4. The portal lists a 34-degree pool with massage jets and a 38-degree pool, with the thermal bath open daily 9 to 21 and the sauna daily 10 to 21 (Keidel). A spa is a quiet, no-talking afternoon for one.

Getting around and Christmas market dates

The centre is compact. The portal says the city has five tram lines, a bike-sharing system called Frelo that works through the nextbike app, and regional trains from the station. It also describes a Welcome Card that covers buses and trains in the regional network, free admission to Freiburg's museums and a ride on the Schauinsland cable car (mobile in Freiburg). The cable car's own fare page also says that holders of the three-day Welcomekarte ride free.

The Christmas market runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026 (Christmas market).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Lange Rote at the Münstermarkt. Go early on a weekday, eat standing, walk once around the cathedral.
  2. Medium: Friday at the Augustinermuseum. Arrive in the afternoon, use the late hours and finish at the café.
  3. Bolder: the Cine Brasil weekend. Pick one screening between 27 and 29 November 2026 at the Kommunales Kino, and stay for the café.
