Salzburg in November is a calendar, not a list. The Christmas market runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, an ice rink on Mozartplatz runs from 12 November, and the days around them are for warm rooms: a beer hall, a marionette theatre and a two-screen arthouse cinema. Each of these has fixed times, which makes going alone simple.

Before the market: warm rooms
Its organisers state that the Christmas market always opens on the penultimate Thursday in November, and for 2026 that means 19 November to 1 January 2027 (Salzburg Christmas Market). Before it opens, and on any grey day, go indoors.
- Augustiner Braeu Kloster Muelln. The Braeustuebl in Muelln, at the foot of the Moenchsberg, has brewed since 1621 and calls itself Austria's largest beer hall: over 5,000 square metres inside and 1,400 garden seats. The beer comes from wooden barrels in stone mugs, and the food comes from the stalls of its market-hall-style "Schmankerlgang". The hall opens Monday to Friday 15:00 to 23:00 and on weekends and holidays 14:30 to 23:00 (Augustiner, German). Ordering at stalls means you do your own thing at your own pace, which suits a first beer-hall visit alone.
- DAS KINO (Giselakai 11). Two halls, a bar and a daily programme with festivals and special series listed on its site (DAS KINO, German). See cinema alone for how to do a first solo screening.
- Museum der Moderne Salzburg. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, closed Monday. Admission on the Moenchsberg and Altstadt sites is EUR 15 regular, or EUR 17 with the MoenchsbergAufzug lift; people aged 19 and under enter free (Museum der Moderne, opening hours).
- Haus der Natur. Open daily 9:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, EUR 16 for adults. It has an aquarium and reptile zoo and exhibitions on subjects such as the Ice Age and the human body, so it can fill a grey afternoon without a plan (Haus der Natur).
The ice rink on Mozartplatz
Ice Magic on Mozartplatz runs from 12 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, daily 10:00 to 22:00. Adult entry is EUR 6.50 (price list of September 2026), shoe and helmet hire is available, and weather can change the hours (Ice Magic). The rink is in the Old Town, and the same page lists a punch stand, so you can decide on the day whether you skate or just look.
The Christmas market as a timetable
The Salzburg Christmas Market on Dom- and Residenzplatz is free to enter and barrier-free. It runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. Hours are Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:30, Friday 10:00 to 21:00, Saturday 9:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 20:30. The organisers also say it has existed in its current form since 1974. New market rules from 1 November 2026 allow leashed, muzzled dogs (hours).
The programme page is the reason to come alone. It lists choirs, who sing on weekdays at 17:00 and on weekends at 15:00 and 17:00. It also lists a free "Sing along!" on Tuesdays, 18:00 to 20:00, on 24 November and on 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 December 2026 (subject to change). There is traditional tower blowing at Residenzplatz at 18:30 on Thursdays and Saturdays (26 November, 3, 10 and 17 December; 21 and 28 November, 5, 12 and 19 December) (key dates 2026). You do not need to talk to anybody to enjoy it, and singing along gives you a reason to be in a group.
A puppet show and a lunchtime organ
- Salzburg Marionette Theatre (Schwarzstrasse 24). The theatre is on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list; the puppeteers stand two metres above the stage and guide each marionette with 12 strings. Its winter 2026/27 repertoire includes The Nutcracker, Hansel and Gretel in a short version, The Magic Flute, The Sound of Music and The Little Prince (Marionette Theatre, winter repertoire). A seat among families is a gentle first-timer evening; nobody expects you to explain why you are there.
- Mozarteum Foundation. Its Grosser Saal lists a lunchtime organ concert called "Orgel zu Mittag" on Tuesdays at 12:30, for example on 24 November and 1 December. The listing shows "Zaehlkarten" as the ticket type but no price, so check the ticket page (Mozarteum, German).
Up the Moenchsberg
Fortress Hohensalzburg is open 365 days a year and, from October to December, daily 9:30 to 17:00. On Advent weekends it opens until 18:00. It also offers a free quick tour, and a Basic Ticket with funicular for adults is listed at EUR 15.50 (Fortress opening hours, tickets). A walk up and a view over the old town is a low-effort solo outing.
Getting around
Salzburger Verkehr sells a 24-hour ticket for the core zone of Salzburg (city), valid for 24 hours from first use, and the site also lists a Salzburg Verkehr app (Salzburg Verkehr, day ticket). The Christmas market's own page advises arriving by train and Obus. Note that the Neutor tunnel has been closed to cars, motorbikes and buses since 14 September 2026, expected until spring 2027; it remains open to pedestrians and Obus lines 1, 8, 10 and 22 are diverted via Muelln. If you stay near the Moenchsberg lift, ask at your accommodation before you rely on a stop there (market access page, German).
First solo outings
- Easy: an afternoon at DAS KINO or Haus der Natur, followed by a walk.
- Medium: an evening at the Christmas market once it opens on 19 November, or the lunchtime organ concert on a Tuesday.
- Bold: the free Tuesday sing-along at the market, or the Mozartplatz ice rink.
