Sofia is a city to do alone on a schedule: the museums keep short, clear hours, one weekday is cheap or free, and the evenings are built around stages where you buy one seat and nobody asks why. Prices on the official sites below are listed in euros. All of it was checked on 2026-11-01.
Start with a Thursday
Pick Thursday for your first museum day. The National Gallery's branch pages each say "Ticket price in all branches, every Thursday - 2 EUR", against EUR 4 to 10 on other days. The branches all open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:30 (Kvadrat 500, The Palace).
Which branch to choose depends on your mood:
- Kvadrat 500, at ul. 19-ti Fevruari 1, shows Bulgarian and foreign collections in 28 halls on four levels. The Zahari Zograph immersive exhibition has its own ticket.
- The Palace, on ul. Moskovska, is the former royal palace. Current exhibitions are listed on the National Gallery site (National Gallery).
- Museum of Christian Art, at the St Alexander Nevsky cathedral square, for icons, fresco fragments and manuscripts (page).
- Museum of Art from the Socialist Period, in Izgrev, with a video room that shows archival and documentary films. It is closed on Mondays and official holidays (page).
- Sofia Arsenal, Museum of Contemporary Art, at bul. Cherni vrah 2, where "Architecture: (The) Possible Art" runs from 29 October to 6 December 2026 (page).
For a free Thursday, go to the Sofia City Art Gallery at ul. Gen Gurko 1. It lists free entrance every second and fourth Thursday, and otherwise EUR 4 for adults. It opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 18:00, and is closed on Monday (contacts). If you do not know what to expect from a gallery visit, how to visit a museum alone covers the basics.
Under the centre: Serdica and the old baths
Two sites from the Sofia History Museum sit within a few steps of the Serdika metro station.
The ancient Serdica complex at Independence Square 1 shows Roman streets and buildings, including the Felix mosaic. The museum's page lists entry at that address as free, and from 1 November to 30 April it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30 (Sofia History Museum, page in Bulgarian).
The main building at Banski Square 1 is the former Central Mineral Baths. It is also open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and the page names metro Serdika 1 and 2 and trams 12, 18, 20, 22 and 4 (main building, page in Bulgarian). Together they make a two-stop morning where the first stop costs nothing.
Evenings with one seat
Theatre. The Ivan Vazov National Theatre at 5 Dyakon Ignatiy Street publishes a programme page "with English surtitles". The programme lists the evening shows with dates, with the main-stage shows at 19:00 (surtitled programme). The box offices are listed Monday to Friday 9:30 to 19:30 and Saturday and Sunday 11:30 to 19:30 (info centre).
Opera and ballet. The Sofia Opera and Ballet calendar lists "La Traviata" from 6 November to 17 January and a premiere of Handel's "Agrippina" on 27 November (Sofia Opera and Ballet).
Concerts. The Sofia Philharmonic lists symphony concerts in the Bulgaria Concert Hall and chamber concerts in the Bulgaria Chamber Hall, many at 7 p.m. (Sofia Philharmonic). The tips in going to a concert alone apply to all three stages.
Cinema. See going to the cinema alone if a cinema seat is your first solo screening.
Daytime backups
- National Museum of Natural History, 1 Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd: open every day 10:00 to 18:00, last admission 17:30, closed on 1 January, 3 March, Easter and 25 December (NMNHS).
- Sofia Zoo lists winter hours from November to March: ticket offices 8:30 to 16:30, stay until 17:00, and no closing day, even on holidays (Sofia Zoo, in Bulgarian).
- National Military History Museum, ul. Cherkovna 92: open Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, tickets sold until 17:00, adult EUR 5.11; the page lists buses 9, 72, 120, 305 and 413 and trams 20 and 23 (museum, in Bulgarian).
Paying for the metro
The metro operator Metropolitan lists these fares from 1 January 2026: a single metro ticket at EUR 0.80, valid for 60 minutes from issue and without transfers. A "30 plus" ticket costs EUR 0.80 and a "60 plus" ticket EUR 1.10, both allowing transfers between metro and surface transport if you validate on every vehicle, and you can pay with a bank card at a validator or at the metro barriers. A day card is EUR 2 and a 24-hour card, which includes night transport, is EUR 3 (Metropolitan, fares in Bulgarian).
