Things to Do Alone in Athens

Athens is easiest to do alone when you start high and keep moving: a viewpoint to get your bearings, a big park to walk it off, and one museum evening in the week. The official city guide calls winter the season when Athenians reclaim their city, so November is a good moment for a quiet, outdoors-first visit with no one to coordinate.

Get your bearings from Lycabettus Hill

Skip the ancient-site marathon on day one. Climb the hill that gives you the whole map of the city, then decide where to go next.

Lycabettus Hill (Kolonaki). The Official Athens Guide describes it as the tallest point in central Athens. A path winds steeply up through pine, cypress and eucalyptus, and a funicular runs every half hour from Aristippou Street in Kolonaki, so you can ride up and walk down. At the top are a small church built into a cave, a restaurant and a cafe, and the guide gives the view as the main reason to go. Allow one to two hours. The nearest metro station is Evangelismos, and the guide's tip for the walk down is to end at Dexameni Square, which has cafes and restaurants (This is Athens, city walks, checked 2026-11-01).

Coming down into a square with cafes solves the usual solo problem of what to do next: you walk, then you sit.

Parks where one person is the norm

Stavros Niarchos Park (SNFCC, Kallithea). The cultural centre lists its hours and info as Monday to Sunday, 06:00 to 00:00. The grounds include a 400 metre canal, the Dancing Fountains, and a rise up to the Lighthouse, a viewing platform on top of the Greek National Opera building with views of Athens, Piraeus and the Saronic Gulf. The official guide says a relaxed stroll of the main sights takes one to one and a half hours. A free shuttle bus leaves from Syntagma and stops at the Syggrou-Fix metro station. Check the shuttle timetable on the centre's page (SNFCC visitor information).

Check the Lighthouse's closure notices before you go up: the centre posts dates when its indoor or outdoor areas are closed to the public (SNFCC visitor information).

National Garden (next to Syntagma). At 38 hectares, the former Royal Garden is a green pocket beside busy Syntagma Square. The guide mentions tall trees of many species, a lake with ducks and geese, a small zoo with goats and rabbits, and a flock of bright green parakeets you can hear before you see them. Enter by the gate under the large palms, to your right when you face Parliament (This is Athens, city walks).

Flisvos Marina and the seafront promenade (Palaio Faliro). About a kilometre from the SNFCC, the marina starts a 4.5 kilometre seafront promenade. Walking from Flisvos to the old airport takes about an hour at a steady pace, and the tram runs alongside the whole route, so you can stop whenever you like and ride back. The guide notes weekdays are more pleasant because weekend crowds are heavy (This is Athens, city walks).

A walking group you can join without a friend

Most guides tell you to join a tour. The SNFCC offers something gentler. "A Walk in the Park" is a new regular walking meet-up in the park, held on selected Thursdays at 10:00 between 5 November 2026 and 10 June 2027, with the dates listed on the event page. It lasts 70 minutes, needs pre-registration, and ends with a rest and a chat around tables. The centre recommends it for people aged 65 and over but says it is open to all ages (SNFCC event page). If a morning with a mixed-age group sounds right, this is the lowest-pressure format in the city. Read the details and book first.

Museums on your own schedule

EMST, the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Hours are Tuesday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, and Thursday 11:00 to 22:00, with last entrance at 18:30 (21:30 on Thursdays). Admission is free on the first Thursday of every month from 18:00 to 22:00, except in July and August. The museum notes it is not covered by the first-Sunday free-admission rule (EMST visit page). See how to go to a museum alone for pacing.

National Archaeological Museum (Patission). The museum shows a Pylos of Nestor exhibition to 31 January 2027 and a William Kentridge exhibition from 30 October 2026 to 24 January 2027 (National Archaeological Museum). Its site lists opening hours by season, so check the schedule for your date.

The first-Sunday rule

According to the Official Athens Guide, admission to all the major monuments is free on the first Sunday of the month from November until March (This is Athens, winter guide). The next first Sundays are 6 December 2026 and 3 January 2027. Free days draw more people, so a solo visitor may prefer a different day for a quiet look around, but the option is there.

Out of the centre

Mount Ymittos and Kesariani Monastery. The Aesthetic Forest of Kesariani is a protected reserve on the eastern edge of the city. The guide says it is a 15 to 20 minute cab ride from downtown and describes shady paths of pine and cypress. Uphill for 10 to 15 minutes brings you to the Byzantine Monastery of Kesariani, which the guide says is open daily except Mondays, with the last entry at 14:30 (This is Athens, Ymittos).

Aegina. The island of Aegina is a day trip described by the guide as a place where most visitors are Greek, with a covered fish market, backstreet ouzeri and the Temple of Aphaia, where 24 of the original 34 Doric pillars still stand (This is Athens, Aegina). Check ferry timetables before you set out.

Getting around

The Official Athens Guide explains that the city's public transport uses Ath.ena tickets and cards, sold at metro and tram stations. As an alternative, Tap2Ride lets you pay at validators with a contactless Visa or Mastercard, physical or on your phone. It asks you to use the same card or device for the whole journey, including transfers, and does not offer discounted student or senior fares. The metro has three lines and the guide lists daily operation from 5 am to midnight (This is Athens, public transport).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: ride the Lycabettus funicular, take in the view, and walk down to Dexameni Square for a coffee. For help ordering and sitting alone, see how to eat alone in public.
  2. Medium: a Thursday evening at EMST, which stays open until 22:00, then dinner nearby.
  3. Bold: register for "A Walk in the Park" at the SNFCC, or spend a weekday on the Flisvos promenade and tram. For ideas on the wider trip, read first solo trip tips.
