Bern is easiest alone if you plan around its fixed days. In November the big one is the Zibelemärit on Monday 23 November, and the rest of the week has its own rhythm: market mornings, a quiet-hours museum evening, a Tuesday observatory and a free bear park that never closes.
It is built for a short November visit or for a new resident, so every pick has a day or a time attached.
One date to plan around: the Zibelemärit
The Zibelemärit is an annual market with a folk-festival flavour, held on the fourth Monday of November. The railway operator BLS lists the 2026 date as Monday 23 November. The market spreads across the main streets and alleys of the upper Old Town and over Waisenhausplatz and Bundesplatz. Much of what is sold is onions, woven into braids, wreaths and figures, but there are also textiles, jewellery, ceramics and toys. Officially it runs from 6:00 to 18:00, and the first sales start around 4:00 (BLS).
Why it suits one person: you walk, stop and move on, and nobody expects a conversation. Go early for the quiet end of the day, buy one braid of onions, and leave when you like. For more on market days in winter, see how to go to a Christmas market alone.
The week, one day at a time
Bern rewards a visit that follows its schedule.
- Tuesday and Saturday: the market. The traders' market on Waisenhausplatz has more than 40 traders. It runs January to November on Tuesday (9:00 to 18:00) and Saturday (9:00 to 17:00); the Thursday market is April to October only (Berner Märkte).
- Tuesday evening: stars on the Gurten. The observatory on the Gurten holds visits every Tuesday evening, led by Astro Events, who explain the sky and let you look through a telescope. You can book with or without dinner (Gurtenpark).
- Wednesday 25 November: quiet hours. The Natural History Museum opens its exhibitions from 18:00 to 20:00 on the last Wednesday of every month except December, with reduced noise and fewer visitors (Natural History Museum Bern).
- Thursday: late at the Kunsthalle. From September to May the Kunsthalle Bern is open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 18:00 and until 20:00 on Thursday; it is closed on Monday (Kunsthalle Bern).
- First Sunday of the month: free at the Kunsthalle. Admission is free for all on the first Sunday. The next one after this guide is 6 December 2026.
Free and outdoors: bears, a garden and a hill
BärenPark. Below the Old Town, on the Aare, the bears have an enclosure that is free to enter and open 365 days a year, around the clock. Keepers are on site daily from 8:00 to 17:00. Dogs must be on a leash and feeding the bears is forbidden (Tierpark Bern). Watching animals gives you something to look at, which makes it an easy first outing. The Restaurant Rosengarten sits a few steps away in the park, with a view over the Old Town, and serves breakfast through dinner (Rosengarten).
Botanical Garden. Open daily with free entry. The garden grounds are open 8:00 to 17:00 from October to April, and the glasshouses are open 8:00 to 17:00 all year. The cafe bar is closed from November to March (BOGA). A glasshouse is a good wet-weather choice.
Berner Münster tower. The tower is open every day and has two viewing platforms over the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the snow-covered peaks of the Bernese Oberland. Buy a ticket at the info point and leave your luggage. Winter hours: church Monday to Friday 12:00 to 16:00, Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday 11:30 to 16:00; the last tower ascent is 15:30 on weekdays, 16:30 on Saturday and 15:30 on Sunday (Berner Münster, tower).
Gurten. The Gurtenbahn takes you up Bern's local hill in about five minutes (Gurtenpark). On Sundays and public holidays the last ride up is at 20:00. Tickets come from machines at the stations, online or via the usual public-transport apps (Gurtenbahn).
Art at your own pace
Bern's galleries are good for one person because each has a clear format.
- Kunstmuseum Bern. Current shows include Franz Gertsch. Blow-Up (Part I), to 17 January 2027, and Journey into Freedom. Capri, Skagen, Monte Verità, from 30 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. The collection runs from Böcklin to Picasso, Hodler and Meret Oppenheim (Kunstmuseum Bern).
- Zentrum Paul Klee. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00. Besides the Klee collection, the Creaviva programme lists Open Studio workshops and a 5 Franc Studio (Zentrum Paul Klee).
- Kunsthalle Bern. Its programme lists exhibition tours, some in English and some in German (Kunsthalle Bern).
- Museum of Communication. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, and from 15:30 it offers a 30 percent reduced admission (Museum of Communication).
- Kornhausforum. Beat Jost, Schöne neue Welt runs from 4 September 2026 to 7 February 2027; it is open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 19:00, Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 17:00 (Kornhausforum).

A film and a drink by the Aare
Cinématte is a cinema, restaurant and bar in the Matte district at Wasserwerkgasse 7. The bar's opening times change by day and are listed on the website. Cinema times follow the film programme, and the box office usually opens 30 minutes before the film. The whole venue is wheelchair accessible (Cinématte). A bar seat before or after a film is a low-pressure way to be out in the evening; see how to eat alone in public.
Getting around
BERNMOBIL runs the city's public transport. You need a valid ticket at all times and must show it if inspected, and the sales office sells Libero tickets (BERNMOBIL). For the Kunsthalle, take tram 6, 7 or 8 or bus 19 from the main station to Helvetiaplatz.
