Rome is easier alone than it looks, because so much of it runs on a clock: timed museum slots, fixed opening days and a market that stops at lunchtime. Once you know the schedule, a solo day is a short list, not a hundred decisions. This page is built around that, with winter hours that started on 25 October 2026.

Rome runs on slots, and that helps you
Alone, a fixed slot is a gift: there is nothing to negotiate, and the museum sets the pace.
- Galleria Borghese, in Villa Borghese. Open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 19:00. A visit lasts two hours, entry slots run from 9:00 to 17:45, and booking is compulsory. The full ticket is EUR 16 (EUR 11 for the last slot), 18 to 25 year olds pay EUR 2, under 18s are free, and a EUR 2 booking fee applies to every ticket type (Galleria Borghese, Italian). Book first, then build your day around it.
- Musei Capitolini, on Piazza del Campidoglio. Open every day 9:30 to 19:30, last admission one hour before closing, closed 1 May and 25 December (Musei Capitolini). Residents of Rome and its metropolitan area enter free with ID.
- Centrale Montemartini, in Ostiense. The same museum family shows ancient sculpture in a former power plant. Open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 19:00, closed Monday (Centrale Montemartini). A smaller, quieter option if the centre feels like too much.
- MAXXI, in Flaminio. Open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00, closed Monday. Full price EUR 15 at the box office (EUR 14 online), and a cafe on site (MAXXI).
- Domus Aurea, inside the Colle Oppio park. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with visits starting every 15 minutes. It is about 10 degrees inside, so bring suitable clothing (Parco archeologico del Colosseo).
If you want a museum tactic, see how to go to a museum alone.
Free on the first Sunday
On the first Sunday of the month, three official sites list free entry:
- Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine. Free admission on the first Sunday of the month, 25 April and 2 June. From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 the park runs 8:30 to 16:30, with last admission at 15:30 (Parco archeologico del Colosseo).
- Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda. Open every day 9:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:30, with "First Sunday of the month free entry" on its menu. An official audio guide lets you listen at your own pace: 45 minutes, 15 listening points (Pantheon).
- Ostia Antica, see the day trip below.
The next first Sundays fall on 6 December 2026 and 3 January 2027. Free days are busy, so check whether the queue is worth it before you head out.
Eat standing up at the Mercato di Testaccio
The Mercato di Testaccio is a covered neighbourhood market with about 100 stalls, open Monday to Saturday 7:00 to 15:30, with entrances on Via Beniamino Franklin, Via Alessandro Volta, Via Aldo Manuzio and Via Lorenzo Ghiberti (Mercato di Testaccio). Stalls include a pizza-alla-pala counter and a stall called Food Box (stall list). Lunch is the time to go; it closes mid-afternoon.
The market's guided visits to the Roman storage warehouse under the stalls are currently suspended for renovation, so do not plan around them.
For general tips, see how to eat alone in public.
Evenings: film and music
- Casa del Cinema, in Villa Borghese (Largo Marcello Mastroianni 1; pedestrian entrance from Piazzale del Brasile). Tickets for paid screenings are EUR 5, the ticket office is open daily 10:00 to 22:00, and the study room is open daily 10:00 to 20:00. By metro: Line A to Spagna, Barberini or Flaminio (Casa del Cinema, Italian). In the dark, nobody expects you to have company.
- Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale Pietro de Coubertin 30. Renzo Piano designed three halls here, from the 673-seat Sala Petrassi to the 2,744-seat Sala Santa Cecilia. The programme lists dates, halls and start times for each event (Auditorium). Guided tours cost EUR 15 (EUR 7 for under 26) and are booked by email or phone (tours).

Walk the old road
The Appia Antica Regional Park protects the ancient road known as the "Regina Viarum", about 16 km in all. The first listed stretch is about 4 km, roughly 50 minutes on foot or 20 by bike without stops, with restaurants and bars from Porta San Sebastiano for the next 2.5 km, and drinking fountains near Porta San Sebastiano and at Cecilia Metella (Parco Appia Antica, Italian). Start at the Porta Capena entrance (Metro B, Circo Massimo) or Porta San Sebastiano (Metro C, Porta Metronia) (how to get there, Italian). Walking is its own company.
A day trip: Ostia Antica
The Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica (Viale dei Romagnoli 717) is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 8:30, and from 25 October to 28 February it closes at 16:30. Last entry is one hour before closing. It is closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January, and admission is free on the first Sunday of the month (Ostia Antica). On free days the Ostiense Museum is closed. The site is big enough to wander for hours without a plan.

Transit tip
The official tourist card, the Roma Pass, comes in 72-hour (EUR 62.90) and 48-hour (EUR 38.00) versions. It includes public transport and entry to more than 100 attractions, and it is available digitally in an app or at Infopoints (Turismo Roma). Check each museum's own page for booking rules, as the card does not replace a Borghese reservation.
Your first solo outings in Rome
- Easy. Spend an hour at the Musei Capitolini (open daily 9:30 to 19:30) and leave when you are ready.
- Medium. Lunch standing at a Mercato di Testaccio stall, then walk the first stretch of the Appia Antica to Porta San Sebastiano.
- Bold. Book a Galleria Borghese slot, then follow it with an evening screening at the Casa del Cinema, both in Villa Borghese. Two plans, one park, no one to coordinate with.
