Things to Do Alone in Milan

Milan alone works best after work. Several of its best rooms are free or stay open into the evening, and the whole plan can be built around one late night. Pick a Thursday, pick one room, and let the aperitivo hour do the rest.

Last checked 2026-11-01. Hours and dates below come from each venue's own page.

Plan the week around Thursday

Most Milan museums close on Monday, so the week has a shape. Thursday is its high point.

Museo del Novecento sits on Piazza Duomo. It is closed on Monday, open 10:00 to 19:30 most days, and open until 22:30 on Thursday, with last entry one hour before closing. Its site also lists a free audio guide, which gives a solo visitor a voice to follow instead of a person to wait for (Museo del Novecento). A late Thursday here means you can finish work, walk to the Duomo and still have a full visit.

Triennale Milano in Parco Sempione covers design and architecture. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 to 20:00 and closed on Monday. Its site lists a garden and places to eat, so you can stay without needing an exhibition ticket to sit down (Triennale).

Rooms that cost nothing

Pirelli HangarBicocca is a former factory in Bicocca that now shows large contemporary art. It is open Thursday to Sunday, 10:30 to 20:30, and closed Monday to Wednesday. Entry is free and the site invites you to book a free ticket. Its bistrot, Iuta, runs Thursday to Sunday until 22:30 (HangarBicocca).

Cimitero Monumentale is a free, quiet walk through sculpture and family chapels. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 to 18:00, closed on Monday, with entry until 30 minutes before closing (Cimitero Monumentale). It is a place for a slow, respectful visit, which is easy to do without company.

Gallerie d'Italia on Piazza della Scala is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 19:00. Admission is free on every first Sunday of the month. Until 25 November the entrance is at Via Manzoni 10 (Gallerie d'Italia).

Book early, then stop thinking about it

Two names have rules, and the rules help a solo visitor. A reservation means the plan is made and the queue is gone.

Both are quiet enough that being alone does not stand out. For more on pacing, see how to go to a museum alone.

Look up: an evening at the planetarium

The Civico Planetario Ulrico Hoepli is at Corso Venezia 57. Its programme is run by L'Officina del Planetario. The listings include guided sky observations in the early evening and evening talks on astronomy, marked for a young and adult audience (L'Officina del Planetario). A dark room where everyone faces the same direction is one of the easiest ways to spend an evening alone.

Aperitivo, canals and a station food hall

The Navigli are two canals, the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese, that flow into the Darsena, the old river port near Porta Ticinese. The city's tourism site names the aperitivo as the thing to do there, and lists the Colonne di San Lorenzo as a meeting spot where people drink and talk by the Roman columns (YesMilano, Navigli). Nobody expects a group, so a single drink at the water is easy to order.

If you would rather choose from many counters, Mercato Centrale Milano is inside Milano Centrale station. It spreads over two floors with 32 artisan shops (Mercato Centrale). For a walk after, the Biblioteca degli Alberi in Porta Nuova is a public park with a botanical collection, designed by Inside Outside | Petra Blaisse (BAM). Castello Sforzesco and the lawns of Parco Sempione behind it are the other classic loop. One ticket covers all the castle's museums, and you can leave through the back door into the park (YesMilano, Castello Sforzesco).

Fifty minutes to Bergamo

When the city feels full, leave it. Bergamo is directly connected to Milan by train in about 50 minutes. From the station an ATB bus (line 1a) runs every ten minutes to the lower station of the funicular, which climbs to the walled Upper Town (Bergamo Alta) and has done so for more than 120 years (Visit Bergamo, getting there, Visit Bergamo, funicular). It is a round trip with a simple shape: out, up, coffee, back.

Getting around

ATM, the city's transport operator, lists travel by paying with your contactless card and an ATM App on its home page (ATM). For the Triennale, use metro lines 1 or 2 to Cadorna - Triennale, or bus 85. For general ideas on arriving somewhere new, see things to do alone in a new city.

Your first solo outings in Milan

  1. Easy. Walk the Cimitero Monumentale on a Tuesday to Sunday morning, then walk on to Parco Sempione.
  2. Medium. On a Thursday, go to the Museo del Novecento in the evening, and finish with an aperitivo.
  3. Bold. Take the train to Bergamo, ride the funicular up and have a coffee in the Upper Town.

Details change. Check the venue before you go.

Thursday. The Museo del Novecento is open until 22:30 that day and HangarBicocca is open until 20:30, with free entry. Most museums are closed on Monday.

Is HangarBicocca free?

Yes. The site offers a free ticket to book, and the exhibition spaces are open Thursday to Sunday from 10:30 to 20:30.

Do I need to book the Last Supper?

Yes. The Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano says reservation is always mandatory for every ticket type, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday.

Is it normal to go to an aperitivo alone?

The city's tourism site describes the aperitivo and the Colonne di San Lorenzo as places where people gather and drink and chat, so one person at the water does not stand out. Choose a counter or a table outside and order one drink.
