Things to Do Alone in Stockholm

Stockholm is built on islands, and the easiest way to enjoy it alone is to treat the water as your route. A commuter ferry links the city centre with a museum island and a park island, and a cup of coffee with a pastry at a cafe counter is a social custom that works perfectly well for one. This page follows that thread, with a few free evening hours added on.

One ferry, three islands

According to Skansen's getting-here page, ferry line 82 runs on the Slussen to Skeppsholmen to Djurgården route, stops at Allmänna Gränd 400 metres from Skansen, and SL fares apply on board (Skansen). Visit Stockholm adds that ferries leave Slussen and Nybroviken for Djurgården and that an SL Card includes the ferries from Slussen out to the Vaxholm archipelago; single tickets can also be bought on the quay (Visit Stockholm). Check the SL timetable for line 82 in November before you plan around it.

Solo travel is easy here because you do not have to coordinate with anyone: board, sit by a window, and get off where you like.

Fika for one

Visit Stockholm explains fika as meeting up for coffee and a pastry, and notes that "fik" has become slang for a cafe, but also that it can be as simple as a coffee break (Visit Stockholm). Its guide mentions the cinnamon bun (kanelbulle), which has its own day on 4 October, and the princess cake, a Stockholm speciality. The semla bun is seasonal, served from late December or early January until Shrove Tuesday.

A good place to practise is Vete-Katten at Kungsgatan 55, a classic bakery-cafe open Monday to Friday 7:30-20:00 and Saturday and Sunday 9:00-19:00 (Vete-Katten). Pick a pastry, sit down, and stay twenty minutes. The eating alone guide has more on the habit.

Food halls and counters

Halls give you many small portions, so you can order one thing and move on.

Evenings with free or late hours

The archipelago in an afternoon

Visit Stockholm says the archipelago has over 30,000 islands, and lists Fjäderholmarna, Vaxholm, Gustavsberg, Värmdö and Grinda as day-trip islands reachable by local transport or ferry within an hour of downtown (Visit Stockholm). Combine it with the SL Card note above, but confirm that the boat you want runs in November.

On any walk outdoors, Visit Stockholm sums up Sweden's right of public access as "do not disturb, do not destroy" (Visit Stockholm).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a pastry and a coffee at Vete-Katten on a weekday afternoon.
  2. Medium: the ferry from Slussen to Skeppsholmen, then Moderna Museet on a Friday after 18:00 when it is free.
  3. Bold: a Wednesday evening at the Vasa Museum, then a ride back across the water.
