Graz is easiest alone when you treat the Schlossberg as the centre of the city and everything else as a short walk from its foot. The hill has three entrances at three prices, the markets open before most cafes, and late November adds the Advent season, from the tree lighting to the Christmas markets.

Three ways up the hill
The Clock Tower on the Schlossberg is the symbol of the city. Graz Tourismus lists four routes to it (two of them on foot), and each suits a different mood (Clock Tower).
On foot. The Felsensteig climbs 260 steps from Schlossbergplatz. Other paths start at Karmeliterplatz and Wickenburggasse. Walking up is the lowest-pressure option: you set your own pace, and a pause on a step looks like a pause on a step.
By funicular. The Schlossbergbahn's lower station is at Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai 38. From 1 October to 31 March it runs Sunday to Thursday from 10:00 to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00. An adult ticket is EUR 3.30, and Graz Tourismus says every Graz Linien zone 1 ticket is valid on it. The ride takes about a minute and a half on a 60 percent gradient with a glass roof (Schlossbergbahn, mobility page).
By lift. The Schlossberg lift starts at Schlossbergplatz and rises through the rock in 30 to 60 seconds in glass cabins. It runs daily from 8:00 to 00:30 for EUR 2.60 (adult); the page lists occasional closures for maintenance, so check it before you go (Schlossberg lift).
At the top, the Clock Tower interior is open only on a guided tour, so plan on the outside and the view. If you want something indoors up there, the Graz Museum Schlossberg is open daily from 11:00 to 16:00 from November to March, is fully barrier-free, and covers the history of the hill (Graz Museum Schlossberg).
Market mornings, Monday to Saturday
Graz Tourismus counts around 20 farmers' markets in the city, and two matter most for a first-timer (farmers' markets).
- Kaiser-Josef-Markt in the city centre is described as the oldest and largest. It runs Monday to Saturday from 6:00 to 13:00. Stalls sell Styrian staples such as scarlet runner beans, apples, pumpkin seed oil, farmhouse bread, bacon and smoked sausages, and there is often a breakfast or a chat at a stall around the square.
- Lendplatz in the Lend district has the same Monday to Saturday hours, and an organic market on Thursday from 14:00 to 18:00. Food and drink places on the square are open on Sundays too, even though the stalls are closed.
Markets work alone because you only need a sentence: ask what something is. Stalls are closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan a weekday or a Saturday.
Advent dates
Dated events give you a reason to go and a clear end time.
- Christmas tree lighting, 28 November. At 16:00 on Hauptplatz, followed by the unveiling of the ice nativity scene in the Landhaushof (tree lighting). Graz Tourismus lists the Christmas markets as running from 20 November to 24 December 2026 (Graz Tourismus).
Crowds at a tree lighting or a Christmas market are an easy kind of company: everyone is facing the same way.
Fifteen free minutes, then a film
Espressokonzert at Oper Graz. Every Wednesday at 14:30, the opera house serves a short concert with coffee in Cafe Stolz, performed by ensemble members, dancers or members of the Graz Philharmonic. Admission is free and each concert lasts about 15 minutes. The programme changes weekly; the Oper Graz page lists the current one (Oper Graz). The programme page is in German. Fifteen minutes with a coffee is a very small first step into a concert hall.
Two old cinemas. The Schubertkino at Mehlplatz 2 is an old-town cinema with film tradition since 1923 and a cafe lounge (Schubertkino). The Filmzentrum im Rechbauerkino, the oldest arthouse cinema in Graz, shows all films in the original version, usually with German subtitles (Filmzentrum, Graz Tourismus). For tips on seeing a film alone, read going to the cinema alone.
Glockenspiel. On Glockenspielplatz, a wooden couple turns to the sound of 24 bells at 11:00, 15:00 and 18:00 each day (Glockenspiel). It takes 15 minutes, and it is hard to look awkward watching a clock.
When you need a roof
- Kunsthaus Graz (Lendkai 1) is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on 24 and 25 December 2026. Graz Tourismus lists free entry with the Graz Card and Graz Card Light and suggests about an hour and a half (Kunsthaus).
- Landeszeughaus (Armoury). From 1 November to 31 December, admission is by guided tour only, Tuesday to Sunday, with an English tour at 12:30. On Saturdays and Sundays in November and December it is also open without a tour from 11:00 to 15:00 (Armoury). It holds about 32,000 exhibits.
- Murinsel. The steel island in the Mur by Vito Acconci is free and open all year, with a cafe. Graz Tourismus suggests 30 minutes, or up to an hour with a coffee (Murinsel).
Getting around
A Graz Linien zone 1 ticket is valid on the funicular. The Tourist Information Graz Region at Herrengasse 16 is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (Graz Tourismus). For more on eating on your own, see how to eat alone in public.
First solo outings
- Easy: take the funicular up, look at the Clock Tower from outside, and ride the lift down.
- Medium: a Wednesday at 14:30 at Cafe Stolz for the free Espressokonzert, then a walk to the Murinsel.
- Bold: stand on Hauptplatz for the Christmas tree lighting on 28 November.
Details change; check the venue before you go.
