Things to Do Alone in Seville

In November, Seville splits into two halves. The big monuments work to a winter clock (the Real Alcazar closes its doors at 17:00), so daylight is for the palace and the cathedral, and the evening belongs to a tapas bar and a seat at a show. Both halves are easy to do alone, because the tourism board describes the bar as the place where a stranger stands next to you anyway.

For the general how-to, see things to do alone in a new city. The full list of cities is on the things to do alone in cities hub, and eating alone at a restaurant covers the basics of a table for one.

First half: use the daylight

Real Alcazar (Patio de Banderas). From 1 October to 31 March the palace is open 09:30 to 17:00, and clearing of the grounds starts at 17:45. The box office opens at 09:00 and takes card payments only. The general ticket is EUR 15.50 and reduced tickets are EUR 8.00. The official site adds that the general ticket also covers the Antiquarium, the Triana ceramics museum and Museo Bellver-Casa Fabiola, which gives a solo visitor spare destinations for the next day. An audio guide opens straight on your phone. (Real Alcazar)

Cathedral and Giralda (Plaza Virgen de los Reyes). Visits run Monday to Saturday 10:45 to 18:00 (ticket office closes 17:00) and on Sundays 14:30 to 19:00 (ticket office closes 18:00). The visit begins at the Giralda tower, the time on your ticket is your access time, and the ticket includes the Church of El Salvador. The evening night tours ran from 31 May to the end of October, so they are over for this season. (Cathedral, Visit Seville)

Antiquarium and Setas (Plaza de la Encarnacion). The Antiquarium is a Roman archaeological site below the Metropol Parasol, covered by the Alcazar general ticket. Above ground, the Setas site lists a 360 degree lookout. Its Aurora light show is listed for April to October, so it is not running now. (Real Alcazar, Setas de Sevilla)

Museo de la Ceramica de Triana (Triana). A visitor centre for the pottery tradition of the Triana quarter, with restored kilns. (Real Alcazar)

Markets as a late-morning route

Seville has up to 18 supply markets, per the tourism board, and four are best known. (Visit Seville)

Second half: the bar

The tourism board puts it plainly: "Standing at a bar implies a close proximity with the person next to you, which gives rise to moments of shared privacy." Tapear means changing bars, so no table has to hold you for the evening. A tapa is a small portion at a reduced price made to go with an aperitif, and fried food is among the best known. Cold options such as salmorejo and ensaladilla are summer favourites, so in November expect more fried and warm plates. (Visit Seville)

Try two or three tapas at one bar, pay, then move on. If a first bar feels loud, leave after one drink without apology: the format expects it.

Alameda de Hercules (Alameda). After the bars, this pedestrian area is the city's alternative night. The tourism board calls it the oldest public park in Europe, with two Roman columns at the entrance, jazz and live music, a cinema and a theatre. (Visit Seville)

Getting around

The tourism board describes Seville as flat and sunny, with bike lanes and a public bike rental service called Sevici. Most bus stops have NFC service points that show waiting times on your phone, and the Metro has one line. (Visit Seville)

First solo outings in Seville

  1. Easy: Walk the Calle Feria market on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday morning and have one tapa there.
  2. Medium: Arrive at the Alcazar when it opens at 09:30 with the audio guide on your phone, then spend the late afternoon at a bar.
  3. Bold: Book the 20:45 show at the Flamenco Dance Museum, or one Maestranza seat, and walk back through the Alameda.
