Madrid is a good city to be alone in because so much of it is built around short, cheap, drop-in visits. The big art museums have free hours, the markets let you eat one small thing at a time, and the biggest street market opens every Sunday morning. Plan around the free windows below and you can fill a week without a group.

The free-hours week
Free windows decide when a visit costs nothing, so they make a handy calendar. Reina Sofía, Thyssen and the Prado all publish them.

| Wednesday to Friday | Prado 18:00 to 20:00; Reina Sofía 19:00 to 21:00; Lázaro Galdiano 14:00 to 15:00 |

Paseo del Arte, one museum at a time
The three big museums sit along the Paseo del Arte, so you do not need a transit plan between them. Do one per visit.
- Museo del Prado, Paseo del Prado. Open Monday to Saturday 10 to 20 and Sunday 10 to 19. General admission is EUR 15; the last two hours each day are free. The tourism board notes that the museum's site suggests itineraries of one, two and three hours, which is a gentle way to go alone (Turismo Madrid).
- Museo Reina Sofía, Atocha. Open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 10 to 21, Sunday 10 to 14:30, closed Tuesday; general admission EUR 12. The museum also closes on some public holidays, so check its calendar. In free hours you still need a ticket, which you can book online, and free visits are for individuals, so you will be fine on your own (Reina Sofía).
- Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. From September to June it is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 10 to 19, Saturday 10 to 23, and Monday 12 to 16. Monday 12 to 16 is free, and Saturday 21 to 23 is free for the temporary exhibitions on the lower and ground floors (Thyssen).
- Museo Lázaro Galdiano. A smaller collection that suits a quiet visit: Tuesday to Friday 9:30 to 15 and 16:30 to 19:30, Saturday and Sunday 9:30 to 15, closed Monday. General entry is EUR 8, Tuesday to Friday 14 to 15 is free, and the garden is open to visit during museum hours. Photography is not allowed inside (Lázaro Galdiano).

Eating at the counter
Madrid's market halls are built for people who want a bite, not a full table.
- Mercado de San Miguel, Plaza de San Miguel. More than 20 stands with tapas and pub fare. Open Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to midnight and Friday, Saturday and holiday eves 10:00 to 01:00. Metro Ópera or Sol (Mercado de San Miguel).
- Mercado de San Antón, Chueca. Three floors: the market floor Monday to Saturday 10 to 22, the tapas and fast food floor Monday to Saturday 10 to midnight, and a rooftop restaurant daily 13:00 to 01:00. Metro Chueca (Turismo Madrid).
Order one thing, eat it where you bought it, and then decide whether to move on. The tourism board's food guide names cocido madrileño (a chickpea stew) among the typical dishes, and churros with hot chocolate as a local favourite (Turismo Madrid). More general tips are in how to eat alone in public.
A Sunday morning at El Rastro
El Rastro is held every Sunday and bank holiday from 9 to 15, from Plaza de Cascorro towards Calle de Embajadores along the Ribera de Curtidores. Turismo Madrid counts more than 3,000 stands and says it has been held for more than 250 years. You do not need a plan, which suits going alone: follow the slope of Ribera de Curtidores and turn off when something looks interesting (Turismo Madrid).
Green space and a high view
- Parque del Retiro. Free, UNESCO-listed, over 125 hectares. From October to March it is open 6:00 to 22:00. The tourism board notes that it may close in severe weather (Turismo Madrid).
- Matadero Madrid and Madrid Río. Matadero sits on the river park. Its open spaces are free every day from 9 to 22, and bike hire is on the riverbank, Thursday to Sunday and Tuesday afternoon. Nave 0 is free Tuesday to Thursday 17 to 21 and Friday to Sunday 12 to 21, except for Madrid Artes Digitales shows. Metro Legazpi (Matadero, Madrid Río).
- Templo de Debod, near Plaza de España. An Egyptian temple from the 2nd century BC, free to enter. Winter hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10 to 20, visits last up to 30 minutes, and advance tickets are recommended (Turismo Madrid).
- Faro de Moncloa. A 92-metre observation deck, EUR 4 general, with hour-specific tickets and a 30-minute maximum stay. Open Tuesday to Sunday 9:30 to 20. It is closed on Mondays except on holidays, long weekends and special openings, and it also stays closed in bad weather (Turismo Madrid).
Evenings alone: film, stars and language
- Cineteca Madrid, inside Matadero. The box office is open Tuesday to Sunday 16:30 to 20:30, and morning sessions can be booked online (Cineteca). The national film archive also runs the Cine Doré on Calle de Santa Isabel (Filmoteca Española).
- Planetario de Madrid. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 13:45 and 17:00 to 19:45, closed Mondays. The exhibitions are free; the projection room costs EUR 3.60 for adults, and showtimes change, so check its agenda (Planetario de Madrid).
- Language exchange. Turismo Madrid lists a free exchange at La Fontana de Oro (Calle Victoria 1) on Thursdays 19:30 to 22:30, and another at Lola09 in Chueca on Wednesdays 20:00 to 23:00 with no booking (Turismo Madrid). Check the venue before you go.
Getting around alone
The Metro runs from 6:00 to 1:30. Pay-per-ride tickets load onto the Tarjeta Multi card, which costs EUR 2.50 or comes free with a Tourist Travel Pass (Metro). Zone T of that pass covers the whole network, including Cercanías trains to Alcalá de Henares (Tourist Travel Pass). Alcalá is a 40-minute Cercanías ride from Atocha (Alcalá de Henares), which makes it an easy day trip.
First solo outings
- Easy: an hour at the Prado between 18:00 and 20:00, free. Pick one room and leave when you are done.
- Medium: Sunday at El Rastro from 9, then a standing bite at a market.
- Bolder: a Thursday language exchange at La Fontana de Oro, or the Faro de Moncloa at sunset on a clear day.
