Things to Do Alone in Manchester

Manchester rewards a weeknight better than most cities: the Whitworth stays open until 21:00 on Thursdays, Manchester Museum until 21:00 on Wednesdays, and a live-music venue on Swan Street runs free Saturday sessions in its bar. Add a canal towpath through the old cotton warehouses and Christmas markets running to 22 December, and you have a city where being alone is an ordinary way to spend an evening. If you are choosing between UK cities, London is sorted by free galleries and Edinburgh by free city museums and green space; this page is sorted by the weekday.

Midweek lates on the Oxford Road campus

Manchester Museum is on Oxford Road, about a 14-minute walk from Oxford Road station and 17 minutes from the St Peter's Square tram stop. Entry to the galleries is free; the main temporary exhibition needs a booking in advance. It is open 10:00 to 17:00 on most days and 10:00 to 21:00 on Wednesday. On Saturday it opens at 8:00, and 8:00 to 10:00 is its Quiet Time, with the Belonging gallery, Archaeology, Egypt and Sudan and the Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery open, plus the shop and café. For a first solo museum visit, that quiet window is the gentlest start the city offers (Manchester Museum).

The Whitworth is next door, beside Whitworth Park. Entry is free, it is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 and until 21:00 on Thursday, and it is closed on Mondays. Free drop-in Highlights and Whitworth Park tours run Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 14:45, which is an easy way to be around people without having to talk. During the Thursday lates, from 8 October 2026 to 25 March 2027, the Parkside entrance closes at 17:00, so use the Oxford Road entrance (Whitworth, opening times, Whitworth, plan your visit). Visit Manchester names Whitworth Park as a green space beside the gallery (parks and gardens).

Two historic libraries, two ways in

John Rylands Library on Deansgate opened in 1900 as a gift to the city and is a neo-Gothic landmark. Entry is free with no booking, Wednesday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:40). The library says there is likely to be a queue outside at busy times (John Rylands Library).

Chetham's Library works the other way round. Because it shares a site with Chetham's School of Music, visitors enter only on pre-booked tours or events, Monday to Saturday. Tours last 60 to 75 minutes, you cannot join more than 15 minutes after the start, and dates are released about six weeks ahead. Children must be 8 or older. A tour is a good fit for one person: a guide, a small group and a clear end time (Chetham's Library).

Free museums beyond the campus

The canal walk from Castlefield to Piccadilly

The Canal & River Trust describes a 2.4 km (1.5 mile) walk along the Rochdale Canal, from Castlefield Junction, where the Bridgewater Canal ends and the Rochdale begins, to Ducie Street Junction. On the way:

The trust also asks you to watch for cars where the route crosses Sackville Street and Chorlton Street (Canal & River Trust). The Castlefield Viaduct sky park, which the same page mentions, is listed by the National Trust as closed for maintenance until autumn 2026, so check its page before planning around it (National Trust).

A gig on Swan Street

Band on the Wall, 25 Swan Street between the Northern Quarter and New Cross, has live music from around the world on most evenings, a bar and a kitchen, and a table-reservation page. It is a 3-minute walk from the Shudehill tram stop, about 12 minutes from Piccadilly station and about 10 minutes from Victoria. Its homepage lists "La Fiesta" free Saturday sessions in The Copper Bar (check the listings for the next date), and its learning programme includes vocal groups and a gentle Wednesday yoga flow (Band on the Wall, visit, listings). A free bar night is the lowest-stakes gig there is: you can stand near the back, leave after one song or stay for the set. Opening hours vary by event, so check the listing for the night.

Markets and Christmas until 22 December

Visit Manchester calls Mackie Mayor an indoor market known for quality and locally sourced ingredients, and Arndale Market a central spot with international flavours (Food halls in Manchester). Both suit a solo lunch: you choose a stall, eat, and are free to go. For eating alone, see how to eat alone in public.

The Christmas markets run until Tuesday 22 December 2026, free to enter, with 210 stalls on sites across the centre. Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens stay open until Sunday 3 January 2027 (Visit Manchester, Christmas).

Getting around by tram

Manchester's tram network is called Metrolink, and the venues above name their stops: Shudehill for Band on the Wall, Deansgate-Castlefield for Castlefield, and St Peter's Square for a walk to Manchester Museum. Build your day around those stops and you rarely need more than one ride. For fares, use the operator's own site (Transport for Greater Manchester) on the day.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Thursday late at the Whitworth. Arrive for the 14:00 tour, stay for the lates, and have a drink in the café, which stays open until 20:00 on Thursdays.
  2. Medium: the canal walk. Start at the Science and Industry Museum, walk to Piccadilly Basin and stop at the Deansgate Locks bars on the way.
  3. Bolder: a Saturday night at Band on the Wall. Go for a free "La Fiesta" session in The Copper Bar, stay for one set and leave when you want.
