York is a small walled city, and in November the day is short, so the trick is to put the outdoor part first and the indoor part after it. Walk the City Walls in the morning while the gates are open, eat at Shambles Market, then spend the afternoon in rooms that are meant for sitting: a library cafe, a medieval hall, a gallery. Nothing here needs a booking or a companion.
Morning: the walls, before the gates lock
The City of York Council describes the walkway as an elevated circular route around the city centre that you can use on foot, for free, throughout the year. It is a good first outing alone because it is a path, not a place: you can join at any gate, walk one stretch and step down again. The gates close at dusk, and the council says locking them takes about an hour, starting at 3:30pm in November and December (City of York Council, opening and closing times). So go in the morning or around midday.
Sections of the walkway can close for maintenance, so check the council page for current closures before you pick a stretch.
Lunch where the counters are
Shambles Market (Silver Street): open seven days a week, 9am to 5pm, with food stalls as well as gifts and crafts (Visit York). Shambles Food Court, inside the market, is also open daily 9am to 5pm and lists street food with vegetarian and vegan options (Visit York). Several stalls in one hall means you can order one thing, eat it standing or sitting, and move on. If eating out alone still feels like a step, the guide to eating alone in public has small ways in.
Sunday at four: Evensong at the Minster
York Minster says its Sunday services are Sung Eucharist at 11am and Choral Evensong at 4pm, and that it never charges people to attend a service (York Minster: worship). You do not need to be a member of the Church of England to join. That makes Evensong the cheapest way to sit inside the building with the choir, and a good fit if you want company without having to talk.
The same page lists these services for later this month (last checked 2026-11-01):
- The First Advent Procession on 28 November 2026 and the Second Advent Procession on 29 November 2026.
If you would rather see the building by day, sightseeing tickets are listed at 20 GBP for the Minster alone and 26 GBP for the Minster and Central Tower for adults and seniors. The tower climb is open to ages 8 and over, and a ticket is valid for 12 months (York Minster: plan your visit). Climbing the tower is the bold version of this outing.
Rooms made for sitting on a short day
- York Explore (Museum Street): the library is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm, and it has a cafe (Explore York). The longest hours in the city centre, and no one asks why you are there.
- Merchants' Coffee House at Merchant Adventurers' Hall (Fossgate): a coffee house in a timber-framed medieval hall, with a lunch special each day and, in the menu, Yorkshire Rarebit. Check the coffee house for current opening hours. Entry to the hall is 7.50 GBP for an adult (coffee house, tickets).
- Bar Convent cafe (Blossom Street): a cafe in a Victorian atrium with soup, cakes and scones, open Monday to Saturday 8am to 3:30pm and closed on Sundays and bank holidays (Bar Convent).
- York Theatre Royal (St Leonard's Place): the cafe is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4:30pm, and the box office is open Monday 1pm to 5pm and Tuesday to Saturday 1pm to 8pm (York Theatre Royal). Look at what is on, then decide whether a single seat suits you.
Galleries and museums: Wednesday to Sunday, mostly
York Museums Trust venues keep their own days, so match the day to the venue.
- York Art Gallery (Exhibition Square): open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. The Upper North Gallery is closed from 15 to 27 November. Adult admission is listed at 9.00 GBP (visitor information, tickets).
- Yorkshire Museum (Museum Gardens): open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, next to Lendal Bridge, 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the railway station. The Museum Gardens are open seven days a week (Yorkshire Museum, York Museums Trust).
- York Castle Museum (Eye of York): open Monday 11am to 5pm and Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm; pre-booking is advised on Saturdays and in school holidays. The cafe is open 10am to 4pm (York Castle Museum).
- Clifford's Tower (Tower Street): English Heritage lists it as open daily, 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3:30pm (English Heritage).
- Fairfax House (Castlegate): a Georgian townhouse museum. Friday opening is 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm; the house closes for installations at times, so check the dates before you go. Friday guided tours accept walk-ins, with bookings limited to 8 people (Fairfax House).
A film at the river
City Screen Picturehouse is described by Picturehouse as a riverside arthouse cinema with a cafe/bar and tapas restaurant (Picturehouse). Showtimes are on that page. For tips on going to a film by yourself, see alone at the cinema.
Getting around
York is walkable: the Yorkshire Museum puts itself 10 to 15 minutes from the station. For anything further out, iTravel York is the council's source for buses, Park & Ride, walking and cycling (iTravel York). The council lists 6 Park & Ride services with free secure car parks and a bus into the centre (City of York Council).
First solo outings
- Easy: walk one stretch of the City Walls before lunch, then eat at Shambles Food Court.
- Medium: a Sunday: Gallery or Castle Museum in the day, Choral Evensong at 4pm.
- Bolder: the Minster tower, or a single seat at the Theatre Royal.
