Cardiff suits a solo visitor because it is small and much of it is either free or under a roof. The tourist board says many of the main attractions are within a 15 minute walk of each other, and the list below leans on that: glass-roofed arcades and a market in the centre, a free national museum and a free parliament building, then park and bay when the weather allows.
Start in the centre, where it is dry
- Cardiff Market: a Victorian indoor market under one glass roof, open Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 17:00 and closed on Sunday. Visit Cardiff says it has traded in one form or another since the 1700s, and that stalls range from traditional Welsh cuisine to artisan coffee and street food, vintage clothing and second hand records (Visit Cardiff: Cardiff Market). Eating at a stall counter is an easy way to get used to your own company, as other people are doing the same.
- The arcades: Cardiff is known as the City of Arcades and, according to Visit Cardiff, has more Victorian and Edwardian arcades than any other UK city. Its seven arcades hold over 100 shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Castle Arcade, opposite the castle, has a balcony with split-level shopping and shops such as Cardiff Violins and Troutmark Books. High Street Arcade dates from 1885 (Visit Cardiff: arcades). Browsing a bookshop or a violin shop needs no company and no booking.
Free national collections
National Museum Cardiff (Cathays Park) is free to enter, thanks to Welsh Government funding. You can book a free day ticket in advance, and charges may apply to some exhibitions. It is closed on Mondays. From Monday 2 November 2026 the winter hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm, with the galleries closing at 3.45pm. The museum notes that there are usually fewer people from 3pm, and its cafe in the Main Hall is open daily 10am to 4pm (National Museum Cardiff: visit). That makes it a calm choice for a first solo museum visit; see spending time in a museum alone.
Cardiff Castle is open seven days a week except 25 and 26 December and 1 January. In the winter period (November to February) last entry is 16:00 and closing is 17:00. A standard adult ticket was listed at 16.50 GBP and includes the apartments, Norman Keep, battlement walks, wartime shelters and the Firing Line museum (opening times, tickets).
Beyond the castle wall: parks
- Bute Park: 56 hectares of parkland, open daily from 07:30 until 30 minutes before sunset. It has three cafes and self-led trails, and sits on Cadw's register as a Grade 1 listed historic landscape (Visit Cardiff: Bute Park). In short November daylight, plan a walk for the middle of the day.
- Roath Park: one of the first public parks in Cardiff, with a 30 acre man-made lake and the Scott Memorial Lighthouse (Visit Cardiff: Roath Park).
Down to the Bay
Cardiff Bay is a former docklands district, and Visit Cardiff says it is a short walk from the centre. A waterbus runs between the city centre and the Bay, and a regular train service connects Queen Street to Cardiff Bay (Visit Cardiff: travel around). For a first trip, one direction by boat and one by foot or train makes a loop.
- Senedd and Pierhead: the home of the Welsh Parliament is open to everyone and free to visit, Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:30 and Saturday and bank holidays 10:30 to 16:30, with last entry at 16:00. You can join a free guided tour or talk, watch live debates and committee meetings, see free exhibitions or sit in the cafe, which has views over the Bay (Senedd: visit).
- Wales Millennium Centre (Bute Place): open seven days a week. On days without a performance it is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm at weekends, and on performance days the building stays open until 11pm. The cafe bar Ffwrnais serves refreshments from breakfast to a nightcap (plan your visit, eat, drink, shop).
- Cardiff Bay Barrage: an embankment walk with views over the Bay and the Severn Estuary. It is flat and has no steps, is part of the Wales Coast Path, and has free exhibitions and an RSPB-run cafe (Visit Cardiff: Barrage).
How to make Cardiff easy alone
- Spend the first morning in the covered centre, with the market for lunch.
- Go to the museum in the afternoon, when it is quieter, and keep Monday free of museum plans because it is closed.
- Use the Bay for the second day, starting at the Senedd for a free tour.
- Plan journeys with Traveline Cymru, which both the museum and Visit Cardiff name for public transport in Wales.
For dining solo, read how to eat alone in public. Another city with its own rhythm is Bristol, and the full list is on the cities hub. If you are new to a place, the new-city guide helps with the first day.
First solo outings
- Easy: a coffee in the museum cafe after a free gallery visit.
- Medium: lunch at a Cardiff Market counter, then a browse through Castle Arcade.
- Bold: a free guided tour at the Senedd, then the Barrage walk to the Severn Estuary.
