Things to Do Alone in Malaga

Malaga on your own works best when you let the official free hours set the plan. On Sundays the Alcazaba is free from 14:00, the Museo Picasso is free for its last two hours and the Centre Pompidou is free from 16:00. They sit close enough to chain into one afternoon. This page uses official sites checked on 2026-11-01.

The Sunday relay

Malaga's Sunday offer is the easiest way to see three big sites without a ticket queue decision. In November the closing times are what matter, so the order below follows them.

  1. Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, from 14:00. The City Council's site says every Sunday from 14:00 admission is free. Winter hours (1 November to 31 March) are 9:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00. A normal general ticket is EUR 7, or EUR 10 combined with the Gibralfaro castle (Alcazaba and Gibralfaro).
  2. Museo Picasso Malaga, 16:00 to 18:00. Admission is free every Sunday for the two hours before closing, which is 18:00 from November to February. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing, and the ticket includes an audio guide you open on your own phone without downloading anything (Museo Picasso).
  3. Centre Pompidou Malaga, 18:00 to 20:00. It is free for everyone on Sundays from 16:00 until closing at 20:00. It sits in the glass cube at Muelle Uno in the port, and admission stops 30 minutes before closing (Centre Pompidou Malaga, Spanish).

You will not do all of it well. Choose two and leave the third for another day.

A cheaper hour on other days

The Museo Carmen Thyssen, at Plaza Carmen Thyssen, is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 20:00 and closed on Mondays. A general ticket is EUR 12, but it drops to EUR 6 if you buy it between 14:30 and 16:00. It also has a special Monday opening on 7 December 2026, 10:00 to 20:00 (Museo Carmen Thyssen).

A normal Museo Picasso ticket is EUR 13 and the museum is open every day. The Pompidou is closed every Tuesday, so a Tuesday is a Thyssen and Picasso day. Its combined ticket is EUR 9.

Evenings: films in the original language

Cine Albeniz, at Calle Alcazabilla 4 next to the Alcazaba, is a city-run cinema with four screens. Its listing marks films as V.O.S.E., original version with Spanish subtitles, including titles in English, French and Korean. The box office opens half an hour before the first session and stays open until the last one starts (Cine Albeniz, Spanish). If you have not been to a cinema alone, see cinema alone.

Market stalls and monthly craft days

The Mercado de Atarazanas is the city's biggest municipal market, with 260 stalls, and was declared a Bien de Interes Cultural in 1979. Check opening times before you go (Malaga City Council: markets, Spanish).

The same page lists monthly artisan markets, open from 11:00 to 19:00 without a break:

Browsing a craft market alone needs no plan. For other eating ideas, see eating alone.

Garden and shore

One bold day: Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey is a cliffside walkway reached from Malaga by road or train. The official site says to buy tickets on its website or at the northern access ticket office. By train, the only stop is El Chorro - Caminito del Rey (Alora), so check the Renfe timetable first. Opening runs from 9:00 until 14:50 or 17:20 depending on the season (Caminito del Rey, timetable).

Getting around

EMT Malaga buses sell a standard single ticket for EUR 1.40 on board. You can pay in cash (no notes above EUR 5), by bank card or with a QR ticket, and it does not allow transfers. The airport line L-A is separate and costs EUR 4 for a single trip (EMT Malaga, Spanish).

First solo outings in Malaga

  1. Easy. A Thyssen visit between 14:30 and 16:00 for EUR 6, then a walk through the old town.
  2. Medium. The Sunday relay: Alcazaba from 14:00, then Museo Picasso for its free last two hours.
  3. Bold. A V.O.S.E. film at Cine Albeniz on your own, or the Caminito del Rey as a day trip.
