Things to Do Alone in Marseille

Marseille works best if you treat the harbour as the centre and everything else as something you reach from it. The Vieux-Port has a public ferry for under a euro, a museum with free grounds on its edge, and boats to the Frioul islands. The hills give you the view back. For a solo visitor that means lots of short, low-stakes outings with a clear start and end.

Start with the world's smallest crossing

The Ferry Boat links the Quai du Port, in front of the town hall, with the Quai de Rive-Neuve, opposite the Place aux Huiles. The tourist office calls it the smallest sea crossing in the world: 283 metres, three to four minutes. The operator RTM says it runs every day from 7:30 to 20:20 (except 1 May), every 20 minutes, with a few skipped departures at 10:30 and 16:30 from the Place aux Huiles side and at 10:40 and 16:40 from the town hall. A crossing costs EUR 0.70, paid in exact change or by contactless card on board. Sailings depend on the weather (RTM: Ferry Boat, Marseille Tourism: Ferry Boat). It is the easiest first outing in the city: you cannot get lost, and it takes minutes.

On the quays, the tourist office says there is a fish market every morning and a flower market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings (Marseille Tourism: the Old Port). Watching is a perfectly good way to take part.

A fort and a free footbridge

The Mucem (museum of European and Mediterranean civilisations) sits at the harbour mouth in two parts: the J4 building and Fort Saint-Jean, linked by a 115-metre footbridge. It is open every day except Tuesday, 1 May and 25 December. One ticket for the exhibitions in both areas is EUR 11 (EUR 7.50 reduced), and entry to the outdoor areas is free (Mucem: J4). The fort has about 12,000 square metres of gardens and a second footbridge, 70 metres long, that leads to the Panier district (Mucem: Fort Saint-Jean). The opening hours change by month, so look at the table on the page.

For many people the free route is enough: cross the footbridge, walk the fort's gardens, and decide at the door whether to buy a ticket.

The Panier and the Vieille Charité

Up in the Panier, the Centre de la Vieille Charité (2 rue de la Charité) hosts the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne and the Musée d'Arts Africains, Océaniens, Amérindiens. The city site says access to both is free. The centre is open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays and on 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November and 25 December; the ticket desk closes 30 minutes early. Temporary exhibitions are free on their first day and on the first Sunday of each month. "Souffles terrestres" runs from 24 October to 13 December 2026. The site lists the lift as under repair at the time of the last check (Musées de Marseille: Vieille Charité). The Café Olla is open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 18:00, a calm place for one coffee.

Up for the view

Out to the islands

Boats to the Frioul archipelago and the Château d'If leave from the Vieux-Port maritime station (1 quai de la Fraternité). The operator publishes a timetable for 17 October to 31 December 2026 as a PDF, and says the boats run daily all year. The price page, with rates dated 1 July 2026, lists EUR 17.70 for a Frioul round trip, and EUR 26 for If and Frioul together, which is sold only at the ticket office on the day. Online tickets can be bought up to two hours before departure. The pier is reachable by metro M1 (Vieux-Port), tram T2 and T3 and several bus lines (le bateau Frioul If, prices). The tourist office describes Frioul as 2.7 kilometres long with footpaths, creeks and military and quarantine remains, and notes that crossings depend on the weather (Marseille Tourism: Frioul and Château d'If). Walking alone on a path with a boat home is a gentle first hike.

The Calanques, with a rule

The Calanques National Park is open all year, except in the event of fire danger. The park authority says access may be closed from 1 June to 30 September to protect visitors, that there is no access during a "red day", and that live conditions and alerts are in the official Mes Calanques app (Prepare your visit, risk of fire). November falls outside the summer closure period, but check the app on the day. RTM buses run to the park entrances: for example, bus 19 to Madrague de Montredon and then bus 20 towards Callelongue, and the same page lists lines for Sormiou, Morgiou and Sugiton (Getting here from Marseille). Carry water and a map, as the park advises.

A walk-in culture site: La Friche

La Friche la Belle de Mai (41 rue Jobin, 3rd arrondissement) is a former tobacco factory turned cultural site. Its own page says it is open 365 days a year and has exhibition space, a restaurant, a bookshop, concert venues and an 8,000-square-metre roof terrace. Large bags are not allowed at the entrance. Bus line 49 stops at Belle de Mai La Friche (La Friche). It is a walk-in kind of place, with nothing to book.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: the Ferry Boat there and back, ten minutes in total, followed by the fish market on the quay in the morning.
  2. Medium: the Mucem's free grounds, the footbridge to the Panier and a coffee at the Vieille Charité.
  3. Bold: the boat to Frioul on your own, with a walk on the island and a return crossing you chose yourself.
