November is the quiet season on the Riviera, which suits a solo visitor: the beach crowd has gone, the city's museums have moved to winter hours, and most of what is worth doing is indoors or on foot. The catch is the calendar. Nice runs on a weekly pattern, and knowing which day is closed saves you a wasted trip.

What winter hours change
From 1 November the Musée Matisse is open 10:00 to 17:00 and the ticket office closes 30 minutes earlier (Musée Matisse). The Musée national Marc Chagall is open 10:00 to 17:00 from 1 November to 30 April, with a lunchtime closure between 13:00 and 14:30 in November and December 2026 (Musée Chagall, practical information, in French). Plan around the break rather than turning up at 13:30.
The Chagall page lists free entry on the first Sunday of each month only for certain groups, such as teachers and under-26s from EU countries, not for everyone. Check the eligibility list on the page before relying on it.
Tuesday is the closed day
Many of the city's municipal museums close on Tuesday: the Matisse museum, the Chagall museum, the Archaeology museum in Cimiez, the Palais Lascaris and the Villa Masséna are all listed as closed that day. The Musée de la Photographie closes on Monday instead. So Tuesday is a day for walking, and Wednesday to Sunday for museums.
Those municipal museums share a ticket system. The Musée Matisse page lists a four-day Nice Museums Pass for EUR 15 covering all municipal museums and galleries, and students, job-seekers and under-18s are free with proof. For one person doing two or three museums over a long weekend, that is the line to check (Musée Matisse).
Monday on Cours Saleya
The Nice Côte d'Azur Tourist Office says the Cours Saleya changes character by day. From Tuesday to Sunday, flowers, plants, fruit, vegetables and local craft products set the pace of the mornings. On Monday it becomes an antiques and second-hand market, with around 180 dealers on the Cours Saleya and Place Pierre Gautier from 7:00 to 18:00 (Tourist Office: Marché à la Brocante Saleya). Browsing is solo-friendly: you walk, look, and leave when you like. The next Monday market is 2 November.
Right on that square, the Musée de la Photographie Charles Nègre (1 place Pierre Gautier) shows temporary exhibitions of well-known photographers and a gallery of regional work. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, with the gallery space closed 12:30 to 13:30, and entry is EUR 5 (Musée de la Photographie).
Old Nice, indoors and up the hill
- Palais Lascaris (15 rue Droite). A mid-17th-century Baroque palace with temporary exhibitions and a collection of old musical instruments. Open daily except Tuesday, 10:00 to 18:00, EUR 5 (Palais Lascaris).
- Parc de la colline du Château. A park with views over the Baie des Anges and the port, a waterfall and lawns. In winter (1 November to 31 March) it is open daily 8:30 to 18:00 (Colline du Château). Go in the afternoon for the light, and leave before 18:00.
- Promenade du Paillon. A 12-hectare promenade in the centre, on Avenue Félix Faure. Winter hours (1 October to 31 March) are daily 7:00 to 21:00 (Promenade du Paillon). A good place for a bench and a sandwich.
Up in Cimiez
Two municipal museums sit side by side in Cimiez, on the Avenue des Arènes de Cimiez, so you can pair them in one trip.
Musée Matisse sits in a villa in the Cimiez area and is open daily except Tuesday. A ticket is EUR 10 (Musée Matisse).
Musée d'Archéologie de Nice Cimiez (160 avenue des Arènes de Cimiez) sits on the site of the Roman city of Cemenelum and shows the remains of three thermal complexes, a housing quarter, an amphitheatre and an early Christian ensemble. In winter it is open Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Tuesday. Entry is EUR 5 (Musée d'Archéologie).
In the dark: the Cinémathèque
The Cinémathèque de Nice is at 16 place Garibaldi. It is closed on Mondays, screenings run from September to June, and a full-price ticket is EUR 6.50, according to its practical page. Its site lists the programme with dates and times. Tram lines 1, 2 and 3 stop at Garibaldi (Cinémathèque de Nice, practical information). A seat in a cinema is one of the easiest ways to be alone in public.
Villa Masséna on a grey afternoon
A Belle Epoque villa at 65 rue de France, the Villa Masséna is a museum of art and history about the Côte d'Azur. Its winter hours (1 November to 30 April) are 11:00 to 18:00, closed Tuesday, and a ticket is EUR 10 (Villa Masséna). It makes sense as a rain-day choice.
Getting around
The Lignes d'Azur network covers the 51 communes of the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis, and the city has three tram lines (Nice Côte d'Azur Métropole: public transport, tram lines). Tram 1 to Gare Thiers, then about 15 minutes on foot, is the route the Chagall museum gives for getting there, and bus 5 stops at the museum.
First solo outings
- Easy: an afternoon on the castle hill, arriving before 17:00, then a bench on the Promenade du Paillon.
- Medium: Monday morning on the Cours Saleya, then the Musée de la Photographie on the same square.
- Bold: an evening screening at the Cinémathèque on your own, on a ticket that costs EUR 6.50.
