Porto works well on your own because the best parts of the city can be done in small, separate pieces: a free museum room, a market lunch, a concert hall tour, a garden. In November, with shorter days and more rain, that matters. This guide is built around the municipal Museu do Porto, which spreads its collection over a set of houses and gardens, then adds a market, a concert hall and an art foundation. It is a different shape from Lisbon's hills and viewpoints.
Start with a free room, not a big attraction
The Museu do Porto (the city museum) is not one building. Its official site lists "stations" in houses across the city, each with its own theme. The stations below are open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30, closed on Mondays and public holidays. That makes them reliable stops on a day when other plans change.
- Casa Guerra Junqueiro (Rua de D. Hugo 32, near the cathedral). The station has a Cabinet of Drawing, listed as free entry. The museum site lists metro S. Bento and the Batalha funicular as ways to get there (Museu do Porto).
- Casa do Infante (Rua da Alfândega 10, riverside district). Built in 1325, it is described as one of the city's oldest buildings. Its Cabinet of Time is listed as free entry, with metro S. Bento as the nearest stop (Museu do Porto).
- Reservoir (west entrance of Parque da Pasteleira). The first station of the city museum is in a former water reservoir, with archaeological finds from the Paleolithic to the present. Parking is free and buses 200, 204, 207 and 504 are listed (Museu do Porto).
Going to one of these alone is easy: the rooms are small, nobody expects a long visit, and you can leave after twenty minutes. For museum basics, see how to go to a museum alone.
Two gardens with long views
- Romanticism Extension (Rua de Entre-Quintas 220). This station of the city museum sits in a green area made up of the Palacio de Cristal gardens and the gardens of Casa Tait, with wide views over the river and the sea. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30 (Museu do Porto). Go in the morning, since the light is short in winter.
- Parque Urbano da Pasteleira. A 2004 to 2009 park designed by landscape architect Marisa Lavrador, with maritime pine, rhododendron and cork oak. The museum site notes a cycle path of about 2 km linking it to other green areas, so it suits a long solo walk (Museu do Porto).
Lunch at the Bolhão
Mercado do Bolhão is the city's historic market, with stalls and restaurants under one roof. On the market's own site the restaurants are listed Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 00:00, and the market and restaurants are closed on Sunday. Market hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 18:00 (Mercado do Bolhão, restaurants). The market also offers guided visits, which is a way to see it with a group rather than alone (guided visits). For tips on sitting down to a meal by yourself, see how to eat alone in public.
Music and art on the Boavista side
- Casa da Música (Avenida da Boavista). The building, ticket office and shop are open daily from 09:30 to 18:00, the cafe daily from 09:00 to 22:00, and on concert days the building stays open until the end of the show. The restaurant serves lunch (12:30 to 15:00) and dinner (19:30 to 23:00) Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sunday (opening hours). A guided tour in English lasts about an hour, with a standard ticket at 12 EUR, and you must check availability on the site first (guided tours). The agenda lists concerts and lets you filter for open rehearsals and tours (agenda).
- Serralves (Foz). The foundation combines a contemporary art museum, a villa, a House of Cinema and an 18-hectare park designed by Jacques Greber in the 1930s, with around 200 species and sculptures on display (park). Its visit page lists a general ticket for all spaces at 24 EUR, a park-only ticket at 15 EUR, and a Late Afternoon Ticket from 17:00, Monday to Thursday, with last admission at 18:00 (Serralves visit).
- Livraria Lello (Clerigos). The neo-Gothic bookshop is open daily from 09:00 to 19:30, and its site says each ticket is a voucher towards a book (Livraria Lello). Visit early in the day if you want a quiet look.
Learn something with strangers
Serralves publishes one-off workshops, a way to be in a room where everyone is a beginner. Examples from the official programme:
- Introduction to bonsai, 13 December 2026, with morning (10:30 to 13:00) and afternoon (14:30 to 17:00) sessions, 85 EUR (76.50 EUR for Friends of Serralves and students). It runs only if enough people sign up (Serralves).
- Terrarium and kokedama workshops also appear in the programme; check each listing for its date (terrarium, kokedama).
Getting around: metro and Andante
Metro do Porto uses the Andante ticket system. The operator says to validate your ticket when you start travelling and whenever you change line or vehicle, at most 10 minutes before the journey starts, with a green light confirming it. The blue Andante Azul is a rechargeable ticket, one per person, and Andante Tour is a separate visitor ticket (1 or 3 days). Fares on the page are dated, so check the current price list (Metro do Porto: how to use, fares). For buses, STCP lists service changes on its home page (STCP). Serralves lists STCP buses 201, 207, 502 and 504, and a metro link to Casa da Música (Serralves).
First solo outings
- Easy: step into the free cabinet at Casa do Infante, then walk to the Bolhão for lunch on a Tuesday to Saturday.
- Medium: take the metro to Casa da Música, have a coffee in the cafe, and book the English guided tour or a concert.
- Bold: book the introduction to bonsai workshop at Serralves on 13 December 2026, and stay for the park afterwards.
