Things to Do Alone in Reykjavik

Reykjavik in November is a city you plan around the clock. Visit Reykjavik lists a sunrise of 09:11 and a sunset of 17:11 for November, so the day is short and the evenings are for warm water, galleries and community sessions. Going alone is easy here because the main activity, a municipal geothermal pool, is something locals do by themselves every day.

Plan the day around 09:11 and 17:11

Visit Reykjavik says winter, November to March, brings short days and a low sun, so the whole day feels like an extended golden hour. For November it lists sunrise at 9:11 and sunset at 17:11, against 7:35 and 18:58 for October. By December the same page gives 10:45 and 15:47.

A simple solo rhythm follows from that. Do outdoor things between roughly 09:30 and 16:30, such as a walk by the sea to the Sun Voyager sculpture on Sæbraut, which the tourism board describes as an ode to the sun with a view of Mount Esja across the bay (Sun Voyager). Then go indoors when it gets dark.

The pool is the main event

The city runs eight swimming pools, and Icelandic swimming pool culture is inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Visit Reykjavik describes them as a mix of sports centre, water park and spa, and says people go for exercise, dates, meetups or solo relaxation. Hot tubs are typically 38-40 C and the pools themselves 27-30 C (Visit Reykjavik on pools).

The rule that surprises first-timers. Reykjavik's safety and conduct rules require all swimmers to shower thoroughly without swimwear before entering the pool. Visit Reykjavik puts it plainly: yes, completely naked, in gender-divided showers, with some pools offering gender-neutral locker rooms. There are posters in the shower areas, and the rules page says private changing rooms exist. The same rules ban phones and cameras in changing rooms and pool areas, and in the sauna you must sit on a towel.

Cost and hours. A single adult admission is 1,500 kr, swimwear rental is 1,270 kr and towel rental 860 kr, according to the fee schedule effective 5 May 2026. The hours table shows most pools open 6:30 to 22:00 on weekdays. Check the pool you pick, because weekend and split-day hours vary.

Two pools to choose between.

A busy-or-quiet check. The city page links to live visitor counts for each pool so you can pick a quieter moment, which suits anyone nervous about a first visit.

A group format. The city's Samflot Floating Together sessions run at 20:30 at Árbæjarlaug (first Wednesday of the month), Breiðholtslaug (third Wednesday) and Grafarvogslaug (second Thursday). Only the pool fee is needed, equipment is provided and a supervisor is present. The city's pools page has the current schedule.

A free Wednesday drop-in at the library

The Reykjavik City Library runs a weekly community meetup called Soft Networks on Wednesdays from 21 October to 9 December, 16:00-18:00, on the fifth floor of Grófin. It is free, open to everyone and needs no sign-up. Sessions look at privacy settings and app permissions, and you can sew a phone sleeping bag, with no sewing experience needed (Soft Networks).

It is a lower-pressure way to be in a room with strangers than a bar, because there is a task in front of you. See also the Helsinki library guide for the library-first approach in another northern capital.

Weather, buses and being careful

The Icelandic Met Office publishes text forecasts, cloud cover and an aurora forecast at en.vedur.is. Safetravel, run by ICE-SAR, warns that weather and road conditions in Iceland are different from what visitors are used to and can change fast; the emergency number is 112 (Safetravel). Walking is described by Visit Reykjavik as the best way to feel the city, and Strætó offers a route planner and realtime bus locations (getting around). First solo outings

  1. Easy: walk to the Sun Voyager after sunrise, then warm up at Laugardalslaug on a weekday morning.
  2. Medium: a Thursday evening at Hafnarhús until 22:00, or the Wednesday library session from 16:00.
  3. Bold: go to a Samflot floating session at 20:30, or the Wednesday Soft Networks session at the library.
