Things to Do Alone in Lyon

Lyon is easy to do alone because so much of it is built around moving through it: market stalls you walk past, passages you cut through, a food hall where you can eat at a counter. November is a good time. The Lyon Biennale of contemporary art runs until 13 December, and the Fête des Lumières follows on 5 to 8 December 2026.

Start at a counter, not a table

The Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse (102 cours Lafayette, in the 3rd arrondissement) is an indoor food hall. According to its own information page, most traders are open Monday to Saturday 7:30 to 19:30 and Sunday 7:30 to 13:00. The restaurants serve Monday to Saturday 11:30 to 14:30 and Sunday 11:30 to 15:30, and the oyster bars (écaillers) are open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 22:00 and Sunday 9:00 to 16:00 (Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse). The hall is step-free, and a hall with many small stands is the gentlest way to eat alone: you order one thing, stand or sit where there is room, and nobody expects company. If you want the basics, see how to eat alone in public.

For a sit-down meal, the tourist office runs a "Bouchon Lyonnais" quality label for traditional restaurants and advises booking. Its list includes Le Casse Museau (2 rue Chavanne, 1st) and Bouchon des Cordeliers (15 rue Claudia, 2nd) (Lyon Tourist Office: Label Bouchons Lyonnais). When you book, ask for one seat; a table for one is a normal request.

Two markets, two moods

Both are good places to practise the small interaction: point, ask for a slice, pay, move on.

Cut through the hill

A traboule, from the Latin for "to pass through", is a shortcut between streets that runs through a building. The tourist office counts about 500 in Lyon, around 160 of them on the Croix-Rousse slopes, and says only about 50 courtyards and traboules are open to the public during the day, under an agreement between the City and building owners. It also notes that many have been closed to protect residents' peace, so keep your voice down (Lyon Tourist Office: traboules and courtyards).

Its Croix-Rousse page names two to start with. The Cour des Voraces runs from 9 place Colbert to 29 rue Imbert-Colomès, and takes its name from silk weavers (Canuts) who were active in 1848. Passage Thiaffait, between 30 rue Burdeau and 19 rue Leynaud, is home to independent creators (Croix-Rousse traboules). Walking up the slopes and down through a passage is a self-guided route that takes as long as you want it to.

A biennale inside the passages

The 18th Lyon Biennale of contemporary art, titled "To pass from one dream to another", runs from 19 September to 13 December 2026. Its venues include the macLYON, Les Grandes Locos, the Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs and the Croix-Rousse traboules, as well as the garden of the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée des Confluences (Biennale de Lyon, venues).

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 19:00. It is closed on Mondays. A Pass for four venues costs EUR 25 full price and EUR 18 for under-26s, and is free for under-15s, art students and Lyon City Card holders. An audioguide covering three venues is EUR 3 (Biennale: practical information). The Musée des Tissus is open Tuesday to Sunday for the Biennale until 13 December, before it closes for renovation (Musée des Tissus). A pass is a neat structure for a solo day: four venues, no one to coordinate.

Museums, with the closing days

So Monday works for the Beaux-Arts, while the Confluences and the Biennale need a Tuesday to Sunday.

Cinema where cinema began

The Institut Lumière (25 rue du Premier-Film, 8th) screens films in the area where the Lumière family worked. Tickets are sold at the desk before each screening: EUR 8.90 full price, EUR 7.40 reduced, and EUR 5.40 for subscribers, with special screenings priced higher. The Hangar du Premier-Film is free to enter during screenings, Tuesday to Sunday 14:00 to 20:00 (Institut Lumière: prices and hours). The Musée Lumière in the Villa Lumière is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:30 for EUR 9.50 (EUR 7.50 reduced), and shows the first Cinématographe and an Edison Kinetoscope. Metro line D stops at Monplaisir-Lumière (Musée Lumière).

Green hours: Parc de la Tête d'Or

The park (105 hectares, in the 6th arrondissement) is open every day of the year. The city says its leisure areas, botanical garden, zoo and rose gardens are all free of charge (Ville de Lyon: Parc de la Tête d'Or). The tourist office adds a 17-hectare lake created from a branch of the Rhône (Lyon Tourist Office: Tête d'Or Park). The zoo is closed on Tuesday and, from 15 October to 14 April, open 9:30 to 17:00. A lake loop with no ticket is a low-pressure afternoon.

The Fête des Lumières

The official site says the festival runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026 (Fête des Lumières). Look on the official site for the programme and map. A crowd that is there to look up is a comfortable crowd to be alone in.

Getting around

The TCL network runs metro, tram, funicular and bus. A single trip ticket is valid for 1 hour in two zones, or 2 hours in three zones or more (TCL: tickets and fares). Check TCL's traffic page for disruptions before you go.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Tuesday or Saturday morning at the Saint-Antoine market, then a coffee by the river.
  2. Medium: a hillside walk in the Croix-Rousse, with the Cour des Voraces and Passage Thiaffait as stops, and the Croix-Rousse market on the way.
  3. Bold: a film at the Institut Lumière on your own, followed by a lit-up evening walk during the Fête des Lumières.
