Sydney is a city you move through by water and along cliffs, and that suits one person well: a ferry seat needs no booking partner, and a coast path has no fixed pace. This guide is built around crossings and walks, with a free island, two free museums and one late-opening gallery night to anchor the days. It is late spring in November, so the days are long and warm enough for the ocean-side plans below.
Let the ferry do the work
A public ferry is the easiest solo outing in Sydney: you sit, you look, you get off when you want. Transport for NSW lists Sydney Ferries lines including F1 Manly, F2 Taronga Zoo, F8 Cockatoo Island and F9 Watsons Bay (Transport for NSW routes). For payment, it says you can use an Opal card, an Opal single trip ticket, or a contactless credit or debit card or linked device to tap on (how to pay).
Circular Quay to Manly. Sydney.com describes the crossing as one of the city's most iconic experiences: it passes the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, Kirribilli House, Bradleys Head and South Head before reaching Manly Wharf (Sydney.com). At Manly, the Corso is a paved, flat pedestrian mall from the wharf to the beach, and the coastal path from Manly to Shelly Beach is concrete with some slight hills. Shelly Beach sits in Cabbage Tree Bay, an aquatic reserve. On weekends Manly Markets take over Sydney Road (Manly). A longer option is the 10 km Spit Bridge to Manly walk (same page).
Cockatoo Island (Wareamah). A former convict gaol and shipyard in the harbour and a UNESCO World Heritage convict site. Admission is free and it is open seven days, with the Visitor Centre open 10am-4pm daily. The F3 and F8 ferries run there daily from Circular Quay and Barangaroo, and the island has a licensed cafe and tours (Cockatoo Island). Our ferry-crossing mission fits this exactly.
The Domain: three free doors
The Domain, on Gadigal Country, packs three free places into walking distance.
- Art Gallery of NSW (Art Gallery Road): free general entry, open daily 10am-5pm and until 10pm on Wednesdays; closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. Entry fees apply to some exhibitions. You can use the audio guide on your own device (Art Gallery NSW). A Wednesday evening is a low-pressure way to see a gallery after work or after a day of walking, and our guide to going to a museum alone covers the first few minutes.
- Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: open daily from 7am to sunset, every day of the year, and in November 7am-8pm. Entry is free except for special ticketed events (Botanic Gardens of Sydney). Sydney.com calls the walk from Woolloomooloo through the Garden and Mrs Macquarie's Chair to Barangaroo one of the world's best city walks (Sydney.com).
- Australian Museum (1 William Street): general entry is free, open daily 10am-5pm and closed Christmas Day, with fees for major exhibitions (Australian Museum).
Planning two of these on the same day works because the Garden stays open until 8pm this month.
Walk the cliffs, swim the pool
The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is a 6 km track carved into sandstone cliffs, passing Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay before ending at Coogee. Sydney.com notes that whale-watching season runs from May to November, and that Sculpture by the Sea, an annual free outdoor exhibition, lines the track between Bondi and Tamarama in spring (Sydney.com: Bondi). The organiser's site lists each year's dates (Sculpture by the Sea).
At Bondi's southern end, Bondi Icebergs has an ocean pool where visitors can swim laps, open year-round. Sydney.com also says professional lifeguards patrol Bondi Beach throughout the year (same page). If you want to try swimming alone, a lap pool next to the surf is a more structured start than the open beach.
Markets and a fish counter
- Carriageworks (245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh): the Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 8am to 1pm. The venue is open Monday to Thursday 9:30am-7pm, Friday and Saturday 8:30am-9:30pm and Sunday 8:30am-6pm, with event-specific times on its pages. It is an 8-minute walk from Redfern Station (Carriageworks).
- Sydney Fish Market: open daily 7am-10pm, with individual retail trading hours (Sydney Fish Market). A seafood market is an easy place to eat alone because you order at a counter and choose your own seat.
- Bondi: Sydney.com lists Bondi Markets on Sundays and Bondi Farmers Markets on Saturdays (same Bondi page).
How Sydney differs from Melbourne
Melbourne's solo case rests on a free tram zone, free galleries and repertory cinemas; see our Melbourne guide. Sydney's is the harbour and the coast, so plan around ferry timetables and weather rather than a tram zone, and leave a gap for the return trip.
First solo outings
- Easy: an afternoon in the Botanic Garden, then the Art Gallery of NSW on a Wednesday until 10pm.
- Medium: the ferry to Manly, a walk along the Corso and out to Shelly Beach, and the ferry back.
- Bold: the Bondi to Coogee walk with a stop for laps at the Icebergs pool, or a day on Cockatoo Island.
