Brisbane is cheap to move around and generous with free things, which takes most of the risk out of a first solo day. Public transport fares are a flat 50 cents a journey, a free ferry reaches South Bank, and South Bank puts a lagoon beach, a museum, a library and weekly free events in one place. In November it is late spring, and the city's jacaranda trees are finishing their bloom.
Jacaranda weeks in New Farm
Visit Brisbane puts the jacaranda bloom from mid-October through early November, so some trees may already be dropping petals when you read this. New Farm Park is its first pick: a riverside park where the grass, rotunda and rose garden are covered in fallen purple blooms, with free-to-use barbecues below the lawns (Visit Brisbane). A short uphill walk away, Wilson Outlook Reserve looks over the Story Bridge and the city, and a short elevator ride from there reaches Howard Smith Wharves, where the same page lists restaurants and bars.
A park bench is the easiest solo seat there is. Bring coffee, sit, and watch. If you want a task, the Solo Era mission below is built for exactly this spot.
Visit Brisbane also lists other jacaranda places, among them Jacaranda Park in Yeronga, Taylor Bridge Reserve in Chelmer and the University of Queensland campus in St Lucia, where it suggests finishing on a CityCat.
Saturday morning at the Powerhouse
The Powerhouse Farmers Markets run every Saturday from 6am to 12 noon in the forecourt of Brisbane Powerhouse on Lamington Street. The organiser suggests taking your purchases to nearby New Farm Park for a riverfront picnic, and says the New Farm Park CityCat jetty is a 300 m walk from the Powerhouse (Powerhouse Farmers Markets).
Brisbane Powerhouse itself is open seven days: Monday and Tuesday 9am to 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday from 9am until late, and Sunday 9am to 6pm, later if a show is on. It is a cashless venue, though Bar Alto and Mary Mae's still accept cash (Brisbane Powerhouse). A venue that stays open into the evening lets you turn up alone, have a drink and decide later whether to see a show.
Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema, in New Farm Park, runs year-round with film programmes Thursday to Sunday evenings according to Visit Brisbane (Visit Brisbane). For a first film alone, our guide to going to the cinema alone has practical tips. A second option is Moonlight Cinema, whose 2026-27 Brisbane season runs November to February at the Amphitheatre in Roma Street Parkland (Val Morgan).
Move for 50 cents, ride for free
Translink's page on contactless payments says contactless payment works on all South East Queensland trains, trams, ferries and buses, and that all fares are 50 cents per journey whether you pay by go card, contactless debit or credit card, or paper ticket. It also warns that you may be charged a default fare if you do not tap on at the start and tap off at the end (Translink). Ferries in Brisbane are part of the network (Translink).
Visit Brisbane describes a free route: its free inner-city CityHopper ferry to South Bank is the suggested link after a morning at New Farm Park, so a day can go from market to lagoon on the water (Visit Brisbane: free things). In the CBD, the free City Loop buses (routes 40 and 50) stop outside the City Botanic Gardens on Alice Street (Brisbane City Council).
The gardens themselves are open 24 hours, seven days a week, although the cafe and information kiosk keep their own hours (same page).
South Bank: borrow a group for 90 minutes
South Bank is the one place where most of Brisbane's solo-friendly options sit within walking distance.
- Free guided tour. Volunteers lead a 2.5 km, 90-minute walk that starts at 10am on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from the South Bank Visitor Information Centre on Stanley Street Plaza. It is free but pre-registration is required, and the organisers ask you to bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle (Visit South Bank). This is the quickest way to be around people without needing to talk to anyone.
- Streets Beach. A free artificial lagoon beach with no waves or rips, patrolled by lifeguards seven days a week (Visit South Bank). That makes it a gentle way to swim alone in public.
- Sunday Social. Free live music at River Quay Green every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm. The acts change weekly; the event page lists the lineup. It is open-air, so wet weather can cancel sessions (Visit South Bank).
- Collective Markets. Art, gifts, vintage clothing and food stalls on Little Stanley Street from Friday night through Sunday afternoon (Visit South Bank).
Indoors when you want a break
- QAGOMA (Gallery of Modern Art): Visit Brisbane calls its halls air-conditioned and free-entry (Visit Brisbane). Pick one work and stay with it; the guide to visiting a museum alone has the pacing.
- Queensland Museum Kurilpa (corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets): open daily 9:30am to 5pm, closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day (Queensland Museum).
- State Library of Queensland: the Infozone is open 9am to 8pm Monday to Thursday, and the State Reference Library 10am to 8pm on those days, with shorter hours on Friday to Sunday. The Library Cafe opens at 7:30am Monday to Thursday (State Library of Queensland). A reading room open until 8pm on weeknights is a calm place to land.
How Brisbane differs from Sydney and Melbourne
Sydney is a harbour-and-coast plan and Melbourne leans on its free tram zone and cinemas. Brisbane's pitch is a flat low fare, one free ferry, and a precinct where the weekly events do the work of introducing you to a crowd.
First solo outings
- Easy: coffee and a bench in the City Botanic Gardens, then the State Library until 8pm on a weeknight.
- Medium: a Saturday morning at the Powerhouse Farmers Markets, then a picnic in New Farm Park and the CityHopper to South Bank.
- Bold: register for the 10am South Bank tour, swim at Streets Beach, and stay for Sunday Social at River Quay Green.
