Things to Do Alone in Perth

Perth works best if you start with the day of the week. On Sundays Transperth travel is free, which turns a trip to the park, the museums or the coast into something you can try without spending anything. This guide is built around that Sunday, plus a few weekday options, a train line to Fremantle and a ferry to an island with no cars. In November it is late spring, so hats and water matter.

Make Sunday the free day

Transperth's page on free travel says that every Sunday, travel is free for all SmartRider and contactless payment travellers. Free travel covers all Transperth bus, train and ferry trips from the first service to the last. It does not apply to late-night services after midnight on Saturday, and a SmartRider must not be in negative balance. Without a SmartRider or contactless payment you need to buy a cash ticket (Transperth: free travel).

Every other day, the city centre has its own free zones. Buses within the Free Transit Zone are free if you start and finish inside it, and trains are free between City West, Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook stations if you tag on and off (same page). Tourism WA adds that the free CAT buses serve places such as Kings Park and Elizabeth Quay (Tourism WA).

Transperth's home page lists service changes across Fremantle, so check the journey planner before you go (Transperth).

Kings Park: a walk with a group built in

Kings Park and Botanic Garden is free and open daily, according to the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (BGPA). Free guided walks leave daily from outside Aspects of Kings Park with volunteer guides, at 10am to 11:30am and 1pm to 2:30pm. The authority describes the walk as about 1.5 hours, easy to moderate. The park covers 400 hectares and includes the Western Australian Botanic Garden, with more than 3,500 species of WA plants, and the glass-sided Lotterywest Federation Walkway (Discover Kings Park). Wear sturdy closed-in shoes, and bring a hat, jacket, sunscreen and drinking water, as the same page advises. The page also says the walks are cancelled if the temperature is 37°C or above.

The park authority's what's-on pages list further guided options, such as the free Friends of Bold Park Bushland volunteer walks at Bold Park in City Beach, which is also free and open daily (BGPA). Check the events pages for current dates.

After dark in the warm months, Moonlight Cinema lists a Perth season from November to March at May Drive Parkland in Kings Park (Val Morgan). Our guide to seeing a film alone has practical tips.

Three rooms by the station

Tourism WA places the Art Gallery of Western Australia, WA Museum Boola Bardip and the State Library of Western Australia in the Perth Cultural Centre, in Northbridge next to Perth Station (Tourism WA). That makes it one of the simplest rainy-day or hot-afternoon plans to do alone, because you move from room to room without any transfers.

PlaceHours (checked 2026-11-01)Cost
Art Gallery of Western Australia10am to 5pm daily, closed Good Friday and Christmas DayFree, with a voluntary donation requested (AGWA)
WA Museum Boola Bardip9:30am to 5pm, closed Good Friday and Christmas DayGeneral admission $15, concession $10, 15 and under free (WA Museum)
State Library of WAMon to Thu 9am to 8pm, Fri 9am to 5:30pm, Sat and Sun 10am to 5:30pmCheck the library's site (SLWA)

Tourism WA describes comfortable seating, views over the city from its upper levels, and a coffee lounge and bookshop on the ground floor. A library open until 8pm on weeknights is a low-stakes way to spend an evening alone. For a first gallery visit, our guide to going to a museum alone helps.

Ride the Fremantle line

Tourism WA says Fremantle is a 25-minute train ride from central Perth. The Fremantle Markets have been running since 1897, and are open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday public holidays: the Yard (food area) from 8am to 6pm and the Hall (general merchandise and food) from 9am to 6pm (Fremantle Markets). The Yard is a good place to eat alone because you order at a stall and pick your own seat. Tourism WA also suggests a walking tour or a roam through the heritage-listed West End (Tourism WA: Fremantle).

Because train travel is free on Sundays, the market, the station and the walk back make a no-cost trial.

A car-free island

For something bolder, Tourism WA describes Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) as a car-free reserve only a 30-minute ferry ride from Fremantle. Ferries also leave from Perth and Hillarys Boat Harbour. On the island you can walk, hire a bicycle or e-bike, use the shuttle, or board the hop-on hop-off bus that loops the 11 km island. It lists snorkel trails at Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay, says humpback whales migrate past from September to November, and mentions the Wadjemup Museum (Tourism WA: Rottnest Island). Check ferry times and prices with the operator.

Back on the mainland, Tourism WA calls Cottesloe Beach one of the city's most popular spots for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and watching the sunset (Tourism WA: Perth beaches).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Sunday morning on the free guided walk in Kings Park, then the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
  2. Medium: a Thursday evening at the State Library (open until 8pm), or a Sunday train to Fremantle with lunch at the Markets.
  3. Bold: a full day on Rottnest Island by ferry and bicycle.

For help planning, see first solo trip tips, the solo travel guide and the cities hub. If you are heading east afterwards, compare Brisbane and Sydney.
