Melbourne is a good place to practise going alone because the centre costs very little to try. Two state galleries, a screen-culture museum and the botanic gardens are free to enter, and trams inside the city centre are free too. This page is built around that: start with free and reversible, then move on to a market, a cinema seat for one and a riverside afternoon.
Start where leaving costs nothing
The easiest solo plan in Melbourne is a free door you can walk out of after twenty minutes.
- NGV International (St Kilda Road): open daily 10am-5pm with free entry. Special exhibitions may charge, and the NGV says selected gallery spaces may be closed from 7 September to 13 December 2026 while it installs the NGV Triennial (NGV).
- The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia (Fed Square): also daily 10am-5pm and free, with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian art. Fed Square's listings show Passage: The Art of Atong Atem (30 October to 14 June, free) and Margaret Preston (4 September to 31 January) (NGV, Fed Square).
- ACMI (Fed Square): a museum of film, TV, videogames and art. Entry is free (some events are ticketed), open daily 10am-5pm, with free Wi-Fi. Photography is not allowed in the cinemas during screenings (ACMI).
- Federation Square itself: a public square where events are often free. Its listings include free outdoor screenings and festivals in the Main Square, so check the calendar for the day you go (Fed Square).
- State Library Victoria (Swanston Street): open daily 10am-6pm, closed on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It has a Readings bookshop and cafes, so you can sit with a book rather than a plan (State Library Victoria, visit page).
Fed Square, NGV Australia and ACMI are next to each other, which makes a first outing with an easy exit.
Use the free tram zone
Fed Square's getting-here page explains that it is part of Melbourne's Free Tram Zone, from Queen Victoria Market to Victoria Harbour in Docklands, up to Spring Street and over Flinders Street Station and Fed Square. Tram travel inside the zone is free and needs no myki. If your journey starts or ends outside the zone, touch on your myki as normal (Fed Square). Free rides make "get off at a stop and look around" a zero-cost experiment.
Market food, standing up
Queen Victoria Market (north of the centre). On 2026-11-01 the market's page listed Thursday and Friday 6am-3pm, Saturday 6am-4pm and Sunday 9am-4pm, with specialty shopping from 9am. Check the market's page for the current week before you go (QVM). Wandering a market alone looks like every other shopper. The Christmas Night Market runs Wednesdays from 25 November to 16 December, 5pm-10pm, listed as free (QVM what's on).
One seat at the pictures
- Astor Theatre (corner of Chapel Street and Dandenong Road): described by the venue as the last single-screen cinema of its kind in continuous operation in Melbourne, with repertory programming and both stalls and a dress circle (Astor). Its calendar lists single features and late sessions, so check the day (Astor sessions).
- Cinema Nova (Lygon Street, Carlton): independent art-house cinema with 16 screens and the Nova Bar. It is fully licensed and lets you take drinks into most sessions (Cinema Nova). Sitting in the dark is the lowest-pressure way to be alone in public; our cinema guide covers the basics.
Out along the Yarra
- Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne (Birdwood Avenue): open daily 7:30am-7:30pm, admission free, open every day of the year. The visitor centre is open 9:30am-5pm. A guided Aboriginal Heritage Walk and The Explorer minibus (from $12, 30 minutes) are listed if you want company without conversation (RBG).
- Abbotsford Convent (Abbotsford): entry is free, with donations welcome. The Convent Bakery and Kappaya are listed on site. The venue's own directions: take the Mernda or Hurstbridge line to Victoria Park Station (10-15 minutes' walk) or bus 200 or 207 to the Clarke Street stop (3-5 minutes' walk) (Abbotsford Convent).
- Yarra Bend Park: Parks Victoria lists canoeing and kayaking, with launch ramps at the Lower Loop and Bellbird picnic areas and boat hire at Studley Park Boathouse. It also lists free guided Park Walks led by volunteers, described as a way to meet people while walking (Parks Victoria).
- Heide Museum of Modern Art (Bulleen): 9 km from the city on the Yarra. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm, closed Mondays except public holidays. Adult admission is $27; the gardens and sculpture park are free. Roadworks are under way nearby, so check the detour information (Heide).
For a bolder afternoon
Old Melbourne Gaol (city centre). Open daily 10am-5pm, closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Adult tickets are $38, with concession and under-30s tickets at $30 (booking fees apply). The ticket includes a self-guided visit and an audio guide in English and Mandarin. The venue suggests 1.5-2 hours and a last entry of 3pm. Night tours must be bought in advance (Old Melbourne Gaol). An audio guide is a good solo format: you set the pace and nobody expects small talk.
First solo outings
- Easy: walk through Fed Square and spend half an hour at the Ian Potter Centre or ACMI. Free entry, nothing to book.
- Medium: ride the free tram to Queen Victoria Market on a Saturday and eat as you walk, then end in the State Library.
- Bold: book a night or a session at the Astor or Nova and go alone, or take the train to Abbotsford Convent and the bakery.
A quick way to start: the new-city guide and the first solo trip tips. If you are heading to a gallery, see going to a museum alone, and for food stops the guide to eating alone in public. All cities are on the cities hub; Tokyo is the nearest Asia-Pacific page.
Solo Era (an iPhone app) has a culture mission, level 2, titled "See a matinee at the cinema, alone." It is free to download. A subscription is required to start missions. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app and depend on the offer and eligibility.
