Things to Do Alone in Adelaide

Adelaide is easiest to do alone if you treat it as one long walk. North Terrace, which the Art Gallery of South Australia calls Adelaide's cultural boulevard, puts a gallery, a museum, a library and a botanic garden in a single line. The market, the wine centre and a heritage cinema are a short tram or bus ride away. This page follows that order: the boulevard first, then food, then evenings.

Start on North Terrace

The Art Gallery of South Australia is at 490 North Terrace. General entry is free, though some exhibitions charge. Galleries are open 10am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day, and the gallery offers a free tour led by a Gallery Guide, subject to volunteer availability. A tour is a gentle way to be in a group without having to talk. The gallery's cafe, AGSA_eat, stays open until 9pm on the first Friday of each month. Large bags and backpacks must be left at the free cloakroom, so travel light.

Next door, the South Australian Museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm except Christmas Day and Good Friday. It has five floors, a cafe open 10am to 4pm and a Discovery Centre open 10:30am to 2:30pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Check the museum's site for current admission.

On the corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, the State Library of South Australia lists its Spence Foyer, Mortlock Chamber and State Library Gallery as open Monday and Tuesday 9am to 6pm, Wednesday 9am to 7pm, Thursday 9am to 6pm, Friday 9am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12 to 5pm. It is closed on public holidays. A reading room is the cheapest seat in the city.

At the east end, Adelaide Botanic Garden is open daily with free entry. On daylight-saving time (October to March) it opens 7:15am to 6:30pm on weekdays and 9am to 6:30pm on weekends and public holidays. A tram stop sits close to the Main Gate. Spread over 50 hectares, it suits a short visit or a few hours.

A market with a Friday evening

Adelaide Central Market at 44 to 60 Gouger Street has more than 70 traders under one roof and dates from 1869. It trades Tuesday 7am to 5:30pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 5:30pm, Friday 7am to 9pm and Saturday 7am to 3pm. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. The late Friday is the one to pick if you want to eat alone without it feeling like a lunch break.

Music helps too. The market lists free live music every Friday night from 6pm to 8pm (What's on). The What's on page also lists cooking demonstrations in the Community Kitchen, including "Christmas from the Sea" on 8 December 2026. The market also says the City to Bay tram stops at Victoria Square, and the free City Connector bus has stops on Grote Street (Getting here).

Wine without a cellar door

The National Wine Centre of Australia sits at the corner of Botanic Road and Hackney Road, beside the garden. On the last Friday of each month its UnWined UnCovered event offers free tastings with local producers, and it also lists a free monthly Meet the Maker session (What's on). It is open until 8pm on Fridays. Tastings with a host to talk to are an easy way to try wine alone.

Seats in the dark

The Capri Theatre at 141 Goodwood Road, Goodwood is a heritage-listed cinema built in 1941. It is independent, not-for-profit and run by volunteers, and open seven days. Its programme lists film nights and special events; check the site for the current dates. A single seat at a cinema is a common first step; the cinema page covers how to book one.

Beyond the centre

Getting around for free

The City of Adelaide says the free City Connector bus has two loops: routes 99A and 99C circle the CBD Monday to Friday, and routes 98A and 98C circle the CBD and North Adelaide every day. The free tram zone runs between the South Terrace, Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Festival Plaza and Botanic Gardens stops. The council points to Adelaide Metro's map for the latest details (City of Adelaide). The Art Gallery lists tram stops at Art Gallery and University of Adelaide on North Terrace.

How Adelaide differs from the other state capitals

Melbourne leans on its tram network and laneways, Sydney on ferries, Brisbane on its river and Perth on a free Sunday. Adelaide's shortcut is geography: the main institutions are lined up along one terrace, so you can leave any of them after twenty minutes and walk to the next.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: walk into the Art Gallery of South Australia on a weekday, stay for 30 minutes and have a coffee at AGSA_eat.
  2. Medium: go to Central Market on a Friday evening, buy something from a stall, and stay for the free music from 6pm.
  3. Bold: take a seat at the Capri Theatre for an evening screening, then talk to one volunteer about the building.
