Hong Kong is a city you ride. A harbour ferry, a tram along the island's north shore and an island boat each work as a whole outing for one person, and none of them needs a booking, a table or a companion. Use the vehicles as the activity, then add a museum open late and one hike.

Ride first, sightsee second
The easiest way to feel at home alone is to be moving. Everyone on a ferry or tram is going somewhere, and you can sit by a window without explaining yourself.
Star Ferry. The Star Ferry crosses Victoria Harbour between Central or Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui. The operator's fare table shows an adult upper deck fare of HK$5.0 on weekdays and HK$6.5 on weekends and public holidays, with the lower deck at HK$4.0 and HK$5.6. A Four-Day Tourist Pass is listed at HK$50. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the service runs from 06:30 to 23:30, which makes an evening crossing easy (Star Ferry).
Ding Ding trams. Hong Kong Tramways runs the old double-deckers along the north shore of Hong Kong Island. The adult fare is HK$3.30, payable by Octopus card, electronic payment or cash when you leave by the front exit. No change is given on board, so carry coins or use a card (Hong Kong Tramways). A good first experiment is to ride a few stops, get off where something catches your eye, then board the next one.
For a general plan for your first days in an unfamiliar place, see the new-city guide.
Late hours in West Kowloon
Two big museums sit next to each other in West Kowloon and both stay open into the evening, which suits a day spent travelling by ferry.
M+. The museum of visual culture is open Tuesday to Thursday and on weekends from 10:00 to 18:00, on Fridays from 10:00 to 22:00, and closed on Mondays. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Access to the Mediatheque, the Grand Stair, Found Space and the Roof Garden is listed as free, so you can come without buying a ticket. M+ Cinema screens on Fridays from 19:00 to 22:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 22:00. The public ticket is listed at HKD 190 (M+ plan your visit, M+ tickets).
Hong Kong Palace Museum. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, and Friday, Saturday and public holidays 10:00 to 20:00. It is closed on Tuesdays. Tickets close one hour before the museum does. The general admission ticket lists HK$70 for a regular adult ticket and HK$90 for a flex ticket valid for a month (Palace Museum visit, tickets).
The free museum on the Kowloon side
The Hong Kong Museum of History in Tsim Sha Tsui is open Mondays and Wednesdays to Fridays 10:00 to 18:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 19:00. It is closed on Tuesdays. The museum's FAQ lists admission as free, though some special exhibitions may charge (admission and hours, FAQ). It is an easy first museum to do alone: no ticket decision, and you can leave when you like. See also how to visit a museum alone.
Green pockets inside the city
Hong Kong Park. Between Admiralty and Central, the park holds the Edward Youde Aviary, the Forsgate Conservatory, an artificial lake and the Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware. The park's page also describes a "Morning Bird-Watchers" activity run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department with the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (LCSD). Check the page for current times.
Kowloon Walled City Park. Built on the site of the former walled city, it has a Yamen, a Chess Garden, a Garden of Four Seasons and Eight Floral Walks (LCSD). Read the opening hours page before you go.
Hong Kong Wetland Park. In Tin Shui Wai, it is open Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, and closed on Tuesdays except public holidays. Ticket selling runs 9:30 to 16:00. The official page says the exhibition galleries and some Visitor Centre facilities are closed for upgrading, so treat it as a walking destination. It also closes when Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above is in force (Wetland Park).
Take a boat out, or climb a ridge
Lamma Island. Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry runs timetabled services from Central to Yung Shue Wan and to Sok Kwu Wan. Its Lamma page lists the walk from Sok Kwu Wan to Yung Shue Wan as recommended by the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Taking a ferry out and walking back across the island gives you a clear start and finish (HKKF timetable, Lamma hiking).
Dragon's Back. In Shek O Country Park, this ridge trail is on Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department calls it the last and steepest section and says the climb to Shek O Peak is "quite strenuous". Views take in Stanley, Tai Tam, Shek O and the outlying islands (AFCD: Shek O Country Park). Treat it as a half-day hike with water.
First solo outings
- Easy: Take the Star Ferry across the harbour and back, upper deck, with nowhere to be.
- Medium: Ride a Ding Ding tram, get off at a stop that looks interesting, then spend an afternoon at the Hong Kong Museum of History.
- Bolder: Take the Central ferry to Lamma and walk between the two villages, or tackle Dragon's Back early in the day.
