Things to Do Alone in Austin

Austin is easiest alone when you plan around three things the city does well: a spring-fed pool, free public rooms and live music that starts early enough to catch on a weeknight. The city is spread out, so pick one area per day rather than trying to cover it all.

Water first: Zilker and the lake

Barton Springs Pool. A three-acre pool inside Zilker Metropolitan Park, fed by underground springs. The City of Austin lists it as open every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (swim at your own risk from 5 to 8 a.m., guarded swim after that). Thursday is different: swim at your own risk until 9 a.m., closed for cleaning from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., then guarded swim from 7 to 10 p.m. Adult entry (18 to 62) is $5 for residents and $9 for non-residents. Bus route 30 stops at Barton Springs (Zilker Park) (City of Austin). An early swim is a very solo-friendly start, because nobody is expecting conversation at 6 a.m.

Zilker Metropolitan Park. The park covers more than 350 acres and also holds the Zilker Botanical Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center and the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens (City of Austin). Walk in from the pool and choose one garden.

The Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake. The Trail Conservancy describes a 10-mile trail along the water, passing downtown and quiet neighbourhoods, with kayak and paddleboard rental along it (The Trail Conservancy). Walk a short stretch from Zilker and turn back whenever you like.

Mayfield Park & Preserve. A 23-acre park in West Austin with lily ponds and peacocks, open every day from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (City of Austin). Bring a book and sit at a pond.

Free and cheap rooms

Austin's public buildings reward one-person visits because you can leave when you are done.

Texas State Capitol. Free guided tours leave from the South Foyer. They run Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m., the last tour leaves at 4:15 p.m., and each lasts about 40 minutes. You can also tour on your own: the building is open for self-guided visits Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day (State Preservation Board).

Bullock Texas State History Museum. Right by the Capitol, open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission for adults is $22; IMAX documentary films are $10 (Bullock Museum).

Blanton Museum of Art. On the University of Texas campus. Open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Monday. Every Tuesday is free; otherwise adults pay $15. Pencils are allowed if you want to sketch, and lockers at check-in are free (Blanton). Tuesday is the cheapest solo afternoon in town.

Austin Central Library. At 710 W. Cesar Chavez St, open Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5. The events list includes adult sessions such as "Board with Books - Tabletop RPG Edition" for ages 18 and up; check the events list for dates (Austin Public Library). A scheduled event with a table is one of the easiest ways to meet people without having to start from nothing. For general tips, see how to visit a museum alone.

Music and film at night

Antone's Nightclub. Billed as the home of the blues since 1975. "Blue Monday" nights are listed on Mondays, with doors at 6 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m. (21 and up); open the upcoming shows list for the current dates. Doors opening an hour early gives you time to find a spot and settle in (Antone's).

AFS Cinema. Austin's only nonprofit art-house theater, on a single screen with a full bar. The lobby opens 30 minutes before the first screening of the day. It runs film series and special weeks; the calendar shows the current programme (AFS Cinema, Austin Film Society). A film is the simplest solo ticket there is.

Sunday morning: market

Texas Farmers' Market at Mueller runs Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the Saturday market at Bell runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Texas Farmers' Market). Walk the stalls, buy one thing for lunch and eat it outside. See how to eat alone in public if you want a plan for the meal.

The bats: a note on season

The Congress Avenue Bridge hosts what Texas Parks and Wildlife calls the largest urban bat colony in the world. Viewing from the Austin American-Statesman Bat Observation Area is free and it is open year-round, but the boat tours run March through October and volunteer educators attend weekend evenings May through September (TPWD). In November, treat it as a stop to see the kiosks rather than a planned evening.

Getting around

CapMetro lists a Local single ride at $1.25 and a per-service-day price of $2.50, with the Umo app offering daily and monthly fare capping. Fares are set to increase on 10 January 2027 (CapMetro). Because Austin is spread out, ride one bus to one cluster per day.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: The free Capitol tour, then a walk across the grounds to the Bullock. No tickets to buy for the tour.
  2. Medium: A Tuesday at the Blanton, or an early swim at Barton Springs followed by a walk in Zilker.
  3. Bold: Blue Monday at Antone's. Arrive when doors open, take a spot near the side and stay for one set.

Out of town for more? Another Texas option is Dallas, and a music-first southern city is New Orleans. The main list is things to do alone in cities, and if you are new here, read things to do alone in a new city.
