Things to Do Alone in Cape Town

Cape Town rewards a solo traveller who plans around structure: a guided walk, a museum tour, a ferry with a set departure, a market with a crowd. Government travel advice for South Africa is firm about crime, so this guide leans on places with staff, set times and company, and keeps the days in daylight.

Checked 2026-11-01 against official sites.

First, how to be careful on your own

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) says there is a high crime rate in South Africa and that the threat is higher when it is dark. Its advice includes not walking around after dark, taking safe and reliable transport, and only visiting a township with a responsible and reliable tour guide (FCDO). The Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution because of the significant level of serious crime (Travel.gc.ca). Canada's page also notes that demonstrations can occur anywhere across the country and sometimes on short notice, so check it before you go.

For Table Mountain, the FCDO reports muggings and attacks on hikers and tourists in Table Mountain National Park, including Lion's Head and Signal Hill. It advises avoiding quieter areas, especially early mornings and evenings, staying on busy marked trails, going on popular days such as weekends and hiking in groups of four or more. Canada says to hike in groups. Kirstenbosch's safety page goes further: it names Nursery Ravine and Skeleton Gorge as the only safe routes up and down the mountain behind the garden, says it is not advisable to walk alone or in small groups and advises groups of five or more (Kirstenbosch safety).

So the solo plan is simple: leave the summit to a group or a guide, and fill your days with the places below. For a general checklist, see solo travel safety tips and solo hiking safety.

Kirstenbosch with a guide

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden sits on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. It is open every day from 08:00 to 19:00 in summer (September to March). Tickets are sold online, cash is no longer accepted, and the 2026-2027 standard adult rate for visitors from outside Africa and SADC is R270. Free guided walks leave from the Visitor's Centre at Gate 1 on Monday to Friday at 10:00 and 11:00. They last about 90 minutes, take up to 15 people on a first-come basis and are led by volunteers; they do not run on weekends or public holidays, and there is no walk on the first Monday of the month. Garden entry still applies (Kirstenbosch information, guided tours).

A guided walk is the best answer to the "alone" question here: you arrive by yourself and leave with a group, a guide and a route.

The city bowl: gardens and museums

The Company's Garden is at 19 Queen Victoria Street, at the top of Adderley Street. It dates from 1652, and the City says it is open 07:00 to 19:00 from September to March. It has a restaurant, water features and public toilets, and borders the Iziko South African Museum, the South African National Gallery, the National Library and Parliament. The City also publishes a self-guided walks booklet (City of Cape Town).

Next door, the Iziko Slave Lodge and the Iziko South African Museum (founded in 1825, with a collection from fossils to insects) are open to the public, and the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum sits in the Bo-Kaap, an area of colourful houses, cobbled streets and steep inclines. Iziko lists the Slave Lodge and Bo-Kaap Museum as open Monday to Saturday, closed on Christmas Day and Workers' Day (Slave Lodge, Bo-Kaap Museum, Iziko visit page). Check the museum's own page for the day's hours.

A free tour at Zeitz MOCAA

Zeitz MOCAA is in the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront and is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. It offers free one-hour tours on weekdays at 12:30; you book on arrival at the front of house team, and capacity is limited. Its restaurant, OCULAR, is on the site, which makes it an easy place to have a coffee afterwards (Zeitz MOCAA). If a museum visit alone is new to you, the tour gives you a guide, a group and a start time. See also how to visit a museum alone.

Robben Island, with a ferry and a guide

Ferries to Robben Island leave from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. The tour takes about 3.5 hours including the ferry trip, and you book on the Robben Island Museum site (Robben Island Museum). It is a big, serious outing and a good one alone: the tour is guided, the timetable is fixed and everybody has the same departure.

A weekend at the Old Biscuit Mill

The Neighbourgoods Market runs on Saturdays and Sundays at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock (373-375 Albert Road). The market says halaal, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other food preferences are all represented, that traders take contactless and card payments, and that there are ATMs on site. The Mill says there is no parking inside on Saturdays and that MyCiTi route 261 stops just outside (Neighbourgoods Market, Old Biscuit Mill, visitor info). Check the market's page for the day's hours. Eating at a busy market stall is one of the easier ways to get used to eating alone in public.

Getting around

MyCiTi, the city's bus network, publishes a journey planner, a mobile app for iOS and Android and the myconnect card, with pay-as-you-go and multi-day options (MyCiTi). The FCDO advises taking safe and reliable transport and not walking around after dark, so decide how you will get home before you go out in the evening.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: Spend a morning in the Company's Garden and one of the Iziko museums, back out before it gets late.
  2. Medium: Join a free guided walk at Kirstenbosch, then stay for lunch in the garden.
  3. Bolder: Book the Robben Island tour, or take the Zeitz MOCAA tour and then walk the Waterfront.
