Are you ready to travel alone?

Eight quick questions about the practical side of travelling on your own. You get your rung on a five-step ladder, from a bus to the next town to abroad on your own, and a checklist for the trip.

Question 1 of 8

You arrive in a town you do not know. Finding your way around feels…

    How the quiz works

Each question is about one practical part of a trip: finding your way, eating alone, evenings, a delay, booking, asking for help, money, and what you have done so far. Your answers add up to a rung on the ladder below. What you have already done counts too: the quiz never puts you more than two rungs above your furthest trip so far, because each rung teaches something the next one needs.

    The five rungs

    1. Bus to the next town. An hour somewhere close, and back the same way.
    2. A day trip. One place, one main thing to do, home by evening.
    3. One night away. A staffed place you booked yourself, dinner on your own, breakfast before you leave.
    4. A few days somewhere new. One base, one plan a day, evenings you shape yourself.
    5. Abroad on your own. Your bookings, your route, and the surprises are yours to sort out.

Each rung is a real trip. A lower one is not a lesser one, and doing the same rung twice is often what makes the next one feel possible.

    Before you go

The checklist under your result grows with your rung. A bus to the next town needs a charged phone and a way home; a trip abroad also needs copies of your documents and a plan someone at home knows about. Tick it off on your phone the night before, and leave the trip itself a little unplanned.

    Questions about travelling alone

Is it safe to travel alone for the first time?

Start with a trip you understand. Arrive in daylight, tell one person your plan and when you will be back, keep your route home saved offline, and choose a staffed place to stay when you stay overnight.

What is a good first solo trip?

A day trip to a town you can reach easily, with one main thing to do there and a return journey you have checked. If that feels like a lot, an hour in the next town counts as a first trip.

What about evenings on my own?

Plan the first one: a film, a walk, a good dinner with a book, or an early night. Evenings get easier once you have had one that went fine.

What if something goes wrong on the way?

Delays and missed connections are part of travelling, alone or not. Ask at the desk, check the next option, and keep money for a taxi back as a last resort. Sorting one out yourself is how the next rung starts to look possible.

    Can I fail this quiz?

No. It only shows where to start, and your answers will change as your trips get longer.
