Type your city, or keep Near me, and get ten things to do alone there, easiest first. Each idea opens a Google Maps search, so you see real places nearby.

How it works

Type a city, or leave Near me selected, and choose what you feel like. You get ten ideas for doing things alone, sorted from easiest to boldest, each with a link that searches Google Maps for real places of that kind. Pick one, check it is open, and give it a day and a time.

The level next to each idea uses the same scale as the comfort zone quiz: level 1 is a short stop where nobody pays attention, level 3 is staying a while, often in the evening, and level 4 means you will probably speak to someone.

Questions about doing things alone in a city

Is it weird to go out alone in a new city?

No. A café, a museum or a park works just as well for one, and nobody keeps track of who came with whom. In a new city, going alone is how you find the places you like. Start with one near where you live or stay, and go back to it.

What is the easiest thing to do alone in a city?

A drink in a café, a walk in a park or an hour in a bookshop or library. They are short, cheap or free, and there is nothing to explain. Every list above starts with ideas like these.

How do I stay safe when I go out alone?

Go in daylight the first few times. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. Know your route home before you leave, keep your phone charged and have money for a taxi in case the last bus has gone. If a place does not feel right, leave; you do not owe anyone an explanation.

Do you store my city?

No. The ideas are put together in your browser. Your city only appears in the page address, so you can bookmark or share the list. When you tap a map link, Google Maps opens your search under Google's own privacy terms.

What if nothing is open near me?

Try Outdoors or Free. A park, a viewpoint or a path along the water works almost anywhere, at any hour of daylight.
