Solo date ideas: how to plan a first date with yourself

A solo date is time you deliberately set aside to do something you enjoy by yourself. For a first one, choose a familiar place, a small budget and one activity: a coffee with a book, a gallery visit or a picnic. It does not need to look impressive to be worth doing.

What makes it a date rather than another errand?

Give the outing your attention. Choose something because you want to experience it, not because it looks good in a photo. Put a start time in your calendar and leave the rest of the day flexible. You can dress up, but there is no required outfit, purchase or post.

Five ideas for five different moods

Make the first plan easy to keep

Check the opening hours, journey and total cost before you leave. Choose one main activity and an optional extra. If the café is full, getting a takeaway and sitting nearby can still be a good afternoon. A backup is more useful than an elaborate itinerary.

If you feel awkward when you arrive

Have a simple first action ready: order a drink, collect your ticket or choose a seat. A book gives you something enjoyable to do; it is not proof that you belong there. Afterwards, note what you liked and what you would change next time. You do not need to love every minute.

Questions you might still have

Can I go on solo dates if I am in a relationship?

Yes. Spending time on your own does not require being single or replacing time with your partner.

Do solo dates have to cost money?

No. A walk with a destination, a library visit or a picnic with food from home can be a solo date.
