A solo date is an outing you plan for yourself: a meal, a film, a walk or a class, done on purpose and alone. It is not weird for a guy to do it. The best ones for a first time are short, low-stakes and have something to do with your hands or eyes: a coffee, a matinee, a gallery, a long walk.
Is it weird as a guy?
No. Restaurants seat singles every day, cinemas sell single tickets all the time and museums are full of people alone. The feeling that everyone is looking is common, but it is mostly your own attention turned up. Staff usually care about one thing: that you are a polite customer.
What can make it feel odd for guys specifically is an unspoken idea that men should go out in groups or to meet someone. You can ignore that. A solo date is a tool for being comfortable in your own company, which also tends to make social situations easier later. For the longer reasoning, see self-confidence for men and the explainer on what solo dating is.
A first-time ladder
| Step | Outing | Time | Nerves (guess) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coffee in the cafe, not takeaway | 30 min | Low |
| 2 | Walk to a viewpoint or park bench | 45 min | Low |
| 3 | Weekday matinee | 2 hours | Low to medium |
| 4 | Museum or gallery | 1 to 2 hours | Medium |
| 5 | Lunch at a restaurant | 1 hour | Medium |
| 6 | Dinner for one | 1.5 hours | Medium to high |
| 7 | Gig, day trip or class | Half day | Medium to high |
Do each step once or twice before moving up. Skip steps you do not need.
1. Coffee at the counter or window
Sit in the cafe. Do not take it away. Bring a book or just watch the street. The Solo Era food mission "Order a coffee and drink it in the cafe, alone." is a level 1 step that matches this.
2. A morning walk with a destination
Choose a bakery, a lookout or a bench by water. Walk there, sit, then walk back. A "reward" at the end gives the walk a purpose. Climbing to the highest nearby point is a movement mission at level 1: "Climb to the highest point you can walk to nearby."
3. A weekday matinee
Weekday screenings are often quieter (check your cinema's own page for times and prices). Sit near the back or on the aisle. See is it weird to go to the movies alone and the cinema guide.
4. A museum or small gallery
Pick one section instead of trying to see everything. Read three labels properly. The museum guide has tips. In Solo Era, "Spend an afternoon in a museum, alone." is a level 3 culture mission.
5. A solo lunch at a good restaurant
Lunch is easier than dinner: shorter, quieter, often cheaper. Ask for a table or sit at the bar or counter. Read solo dining etiquette for what to do with your phone and how to order.
6. Dinner somewhere with tablecloths
Book a table for one. Decide on your order in advance if it helps. This maps to the level 3 mission "Have afternoon tea for one." It is a bigger step; do it after you have done lunch.
7. A cooking or craft class
Classes give you a task and a built-in topic. Look for single-session classes on a studio's own site. A group fitness or climbing class is another one: "Go to a climbing wall on your own." (movement, level 3).
8. A gig or concert
Music does the talking. Stand at the side, enjoy the set, leave when you want. See going to a concert alone.
9. A solo day trip by train
Choose a town, buy a return ticket and have a loose plan. Solo day trips has ideas, and solo travel for men goes further.
10. A hike or long walk
Pick a marked route and tell someone where you are going. Take water, a charged phone and a map. Practise on shorter routes first.
11. Build or make something at home
LEGO, a model, a recipe you never tried. It counts as a date because you planned it and set aside time. The solitude mission "Build something with LEGO bricks." is level 1. See solo date at home.
12. A bar or pub early in the evening, with food
If you like pubs, go before it fills up, sit at the bar and order food. Early evening is calmer, and a menu gives you something to do. Pace yourself and keep it short.
What about "dating" while doing this?
The phrase "solo date" means a date with yourself, not a way of meeting someone. If you do meet someone, fine, but don't plan it that way; people notice and it takes the fun out. Plan for the experience itself. If you are looking for a partner, a solo date can help you practise being at ease in public places, which helps in other contexts; see how to build dating confidence. Solo Era is not a dating app and has no matching features.
Clothes, phone and expectations
- Clothes: wear something comfortable that you like; see solo date outfit ideas.
- Phone: take it, but leave it in your pocket for the first half. Take a photo of your meal or the view if you want a memory.
- Expectations: the first one may feel awkward. The second is often easier. If it was bad, change the venue, not the plan.
- Checklist: the solo date checklist has a short list for before you leave.
Tracking the nerves
A simple way to see progress is to rate how nervous you feel from 1 to 10 before and after each outing, then compare. Solo Era is an iPhone app built around that: small missions for doing things alone in categories such as food, movement, culture and everyday, five difficulty levels, before-and-after nervousness ratings and a photo journal. It is for practice, not therapy. Free to download; a subscription is required to start missions. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app and depend on the offer and eligibility.
When it is more than nerves
If going out alone fills you with intense dread, or you feel isolated for long stretches, talking to a friend or professional is a sound step. This page is general information, not medical advice. Our solo date generator is a quick way to get one idea without overthinking.
FAQ
Is it weird for a guy to go on a solo date?
No. People do it all the time, and most people are focused on their own plans. If it feels strange, start with a short outing like a coffee.
What is a good first solo date for a guy?
A coffee in the cafe, a short walk or a weekday matinee. Short and low-stakes.
Can I go to a restaurant alone as a man?
Yes. Ask for a table for one, or sit at the bar or counter. Lunch is easier than dinner.
Should I treat a solo date as a way to meet someone?
No. Treat it as time for yourself. If you do chat with someone, that is a bonus, not the aim.
What if I feel awkward the whole time?
That is common on the first try. Note what felt hard, adjust the venue or time of day and try again.
How often should I go on solo dates?
Whatever suits you. Weekly or fortnightly works for many people; the solo date generator can give you ideas.
