How to Spend Thanksgiving Alone

To spend Thanksgiving alone well, pick a small feast you actually want, mark the day with a walk and one message to someone, and consider a Friendsgiving invitation if you would like company. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November in 2026, so there is time to plan the food, the day and a gentle script for asking.

For other holidays and the broader mindset, see spending the holidays alone. For the next one in the calendar, Christmas Day alone has an hour-by-hour plan.

Decide what the day is for

Thanksgiving is built around food, gratitude and gathering. Alone, you can keep the first two and adjust the third.

If you want...Try...
TraditionA small roast or a favourite side, a parade or a football game on TV
RestPyjamas, a long film, a simple meal
GratitudeA written list, a letter or a call
CompanyA Friendsgiving, a volunteer shift or a video call during the meal
A changeA restaurant meal or a day trip, if you check hours first

A feast scaled for one

Cooking the full menu for one person means leftovers for a week. Instead, choose a short menu.

CourseSolo-sized ideaNotes
MainRoast chicken thighs, a turkey breast portion, or a stuffed squashAsk your butcher or shop for a small cut
Side 1Mashed potatoes or a sweet potato bake in a small dishMake a normal batch; freeze portions
Side 2Green beans, roasted vegetables or a simple saladFast and fresh
ExtraStuffing or cranberry, but only one of themPick the one you love
DessertA single slice of pie, or a mug dessertBuy one slice rather than a whole pie

Practical tips: write the shopping list on Monday, shop on Tuesday or Wednesday, and cook the longest item first. Set the table with a cloth or candle. Use your good plate. Pie for breakfast the next day is allowed. More on portions and meal-prep is in how to cook for one and solo dinner ideas.

If you do not cook, order from a restaurant that offers takeaway. Check the restaurant's own website early, since many places take pre-orders and sell out.

The "orphan" Friendsgiving script

Many people host a Friendsgiving or an "orphan" Thanksgiving for people without plans. You do not have to wait to be invited. Here is a script for asking.

To a friend or coworker: "Hi! I'm not travelling for Thanksgiving this year. If you're hosting anything or have a spare seat, I'd love to come, and I'm happy to bring a dish. No worries if it's full."

To a neighbour: "Hi, I'm [Name] from [floor/number]. I'm around for Thanksgiving. If you're planning anything small, I'd be glad to bring dessert. Either way, happy Thanksgiving."

To a group chat: "Anyone around on the 26th and up for a casual meal? I can cook [dish] or bring [dessert]."

To a community group or club: "I'm in town for Thanksgiving. Is there a group meal or event? I'm happy to help with setup."

Three tips: offer a specific dish (hosts like contributions), give the host an easy out, and ask a week or two before. If someone says no, thank them and move on. More about asking is in how to invite someone to hang out.

If you want to host yourself, invite one or two people who are also not travelling. A small table is easier than a big one. Check any building rules and allergies, and keep it simple.

Volunteering and community meals

Many charities and community centres run meals or need helpers. Look at their official pages for details, sign-up deadlines and requirements, and do not turn up uninvited. Availability and rules change every year, so check directly.

Eating out alone on Thanksgiving

Some restaurants serve a set menu; others close. Look at the restaurant's own site or call. If you have never eaten out alone, the restaurant guide for going alone walks through the steps, and solo dining etiquette covers seating and ordering. Take a book or just watch the room. A level 3 food mission in Solo Era is "Try a vegetarian restaurant on your own."

Gratitude without the pressure

Gratitude lists can feel forced on a hard day. Keep it small: three things that were fine this week, one person you could thank, one thing you did well. The journal prompts tool has starting points. If gratitude feels impossible today, skip it.

When the day feels too heavy

Many people feel fine alone on Thanksgiving. Others find it painful, especially after a loss or a family rift. If you feel very low, hopeless or unsafe, please reach out today: a friend, a family member, your doctor, local emergency services or a crisis line. You can find a helpline for your country at findahelpline.com. You do not need to wait for it to be bad enough. This page is general information, not medical advice. Solo Era is not therapy. If you want to understand what you are feeling, alone vs lonely explains the difference.

Where Solo Era fits

Solo Era is an iPhone app for practising doing things alone, with small missions in categories such as food, movement and people, five difficulty levels, a rating of how nervous you felt before and after, and a photo journal. It has no Thanksgiving-specific missions. A food mission such as "Ask for a taste at a deli or cheese counter, then buy some." (level 1) fits the shopping stage, and the people mission "Ask a staff member one genuine question." (level 1) is a low-stakes way to practise before you ask someone about a Friendsgiving. Free to download; a subscription is required to start missions. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app and depend on the offer and eligibility.

Is it okay to spend Thanksgiving alone?

What can I cook for one person?

A small main, two sides and a single dessert slice. Freeze extra portions or invite a neighbour for dessert.

How do I ask to join someone's Thanksgiving?

Ask early, offer a dish and give them an easy way to say no. The scripts above can be copied.

What if I feel lonely on the day?

Plan a message or call, go for a walk and avoid scrolling. If the feeling is heavy, speak to someone you trust or use a helpline listed at findahelpline.com.

Is there anything I can do to make the day feel special?

Set the table, play music you like and give yourself a small present, like a favourite dessert. Small rituals make the day yours.
