How to Talk to a Girl You Like

To talk to a girl you like, treat her as a person first: start with something small and real, such as a comment about where you both are, ask an open question and listen to the answer. Keep the first conversations short and relaxed, and let interest build over several chats. The same approach works for anyone you like, whatever their gender.

Why it feels so hard

When you like someone, ordinary talking suddenly feels high-stakes. You monitor every word, replay things afterwards and imagine how she sees you. That attention on yourself is what makes you freeze. The fix is not to become smoother. It is to shift your attention outward, to her, and to lower the stakes by making early conversations short.

This is general advice, not a guarantee, and everyone's situation is different. If anxiety around talking to people is intense or constant, consider speaking to a qualified professional.

Step 1: Treat it as a normal conversation

You would talk to a colleague or a classmate without a script. Do the same here. You are not trying to win her; you are finding out whether you enjoy talking with each other. That is a much lighter job. Remind yourself: "I'm just having a chat."

Step 2: Start with something small and true

The easiest opener is something about where you both are. You do not need to be clever.

If you want more openers, our conversation starters page covers a range, and the what to say tool offers short lines you can use.

Step 3: Ask open questions and follow up

The key is to ask something that needs more than yes or no, then follow up on what she says. Compare:

ClosedOpen
"Do you like this place?""What do you like about this place?"
"Do you have a job?""What do you do, and what do you like about it?"
"Do you like music?""What have you been listening to lately?"

Then follow up: "Why that one?", "How did you get into it?", "What was that like?" Good conversations are mostly curiosity. Our how to make small talk page goes into the follow-up technique in more detail.

Step 4: Share a little about yourself

An interview is as awkward as silence. After she answers, offer something similar: "I've been listening to a lot of old soul records. What kind of music do you like?" The pattern is ask, listen, follow up, share. Keep your answers short and real.

Step 5: Listen and read the response

Pay attention to how she responds. If she asks you questions back, turns towards you, laughs and keeps the conversation going, she is probably enjoying it. If she gives short answers, looks away or keeps checking her phone, she may be busy or not interested. Neither is a verdict on you. It is simply information, so you can adjust.

Step 6: Talk more than once

One conversation rarely tells you much. Aim for several short ones: a hello, a comment, a question about something she mentioned last time. Remembering a detail ("How was the trip you mentioned?") shows you listened and builds familiarity. It also takes the pressure off any single chat.

Step 7: Move towards a plan when it feels natural

If the conversations are friendly and mutual, you can suggest something simple: a coffee, a walk, a class together. Our page on how to ask someone out has scripts you can adapt. If she says no, thank her and move on kindly.

When you freeze

You will sometimes blank. It is normal, and there are easy rescues:

If you need to leave, do it politely: "Nice talking to you. I'll see you around." Then try again another day.

What not to do

Build the skill with practice

Talking to someone you like is the hardest version of a skill you can practise in easier settings: chatting to a barista, a neighbour or someone at a class. You can also read the wider plan in how to build dating confidence and in our social confidence guide.

Solo Era is an iPhone app of small missions for doing things alone, with a before-and-after nervousness rating. Its people category includes "Ask a staff member one genuine question." at level 1, a small exercise in starting a conversation. It is not a dating app and does not help you meet or match with anyone. It is free to download, and a subscription is required to start missions.

FAQ

What should I say first to a girl I like?

Something small and true about the setting or her, followed by an open question. For example, "How are you finding this class so far?"

How do I know if she likes me?

Look for two-way effort: she asks questions, keeps the conversation going and seems relaxed. Mixed signals are common, so a clear, kind invitation is the best test.

What if I get nervous and cannot speak?

Slow your breathing, ask a simple question and let a pause happen. Saying "I'm a bit nervous" lightly can also help.

How long should the first conversation be?

Short is fine, a minute or two. Several brief chats build more than one long one.

What if she is not interested?

Accept it politely and move on. It is part of meeting people and says little about your worth.
